U need the lamp that is rated universal or vertical and open air rated.
Here's the part number for the phillips to use as an example:
315/T12/942/U/O

After the 942 if your has an h instead of a u or v it's for horizontal operating only, make sure you have the o as well.....that's the most important One!

Just have it mounted on one side with a set of hooks to keep it straight.. your guy might not understand that it doesnt matter what orientation its in... but I would suggest looking at this before you drop that coin. Perhaps set yourself straight if you're looking for some real efficiency.

I want to run bulbs vert with plants in a stadium, my mate just converted his room using 4x 600w hps and the plants are absolutely loving it, I just don't want to ruin 3 brand new expensive bulbs as they are very hard to get replaced where I live and cost an arm and a leg (we are a few years behind you guys in the usa with tech etc) and very few people here are running them here.

Just dont hit them, they a bulbs and they run cooler than HPS. You can have them facing the ceiling if you wanted.. but keep in mind that they only cover a 2.5x2.5ft footprint with good light.

they are meant to be ran vert, there is a slight spectrum shift running them horizonal

Have you seen this actually happen, or tested in a sphere? If so please share the results. If not any its hear say that makes no sense, all light bulbs can be ran for vert Ive never seen a color shift myself or a PAR output change.
