Hi, I'm fairly new to RIU and I am reading through as much info as possible (including reading through the back pages of this thread) regarding LED's.
I'm planning a small grow tent set up. I am thinking of getting an AgroMax 2x4 (28.75"x53"x78.75") tent. I am concerned about the heat as where I live is hot (though I have a window ac), so MH/HPS lights aren't on the table.
I am considering using a Black Dog PhytoMax 400w for this space which has a 5'x5' veg footprint and a 3.5'x3.5' flowering footprint. I would supplement around the sides using CFL's. I would consider possibly just doing CFL's for my first grow but would be interested in already upping the ante and getting a quality LED. What are people's thoughts?

Well.... I have 4 timber grow light kits. They crush a 5x5 foot area.
I like northern grow lights prebuilt lights.....can't beat the prices for a whole light assembled!
Other than that.....right now I'm looking at the California light works 550. It's a pretty good price.... I have two Osram Zelion HLs. Super pricey but they're just cool.....but it would cost about $3k to cover a 5x5
So for your tent I'd get the timber DIY lights. Just need to go to homedepot and get a rivet gun and rivets and aluminum L channel and you could have an awesome light in your space.
To figure out how much light you need on a Windows based computer search this forum for DIY cob calculator. Use that to figure how many lights you need.... Aim for 750 PPFD max over your grow are and you'll be fine.

I think Timber sells kits that run a lil harder. Thing is, I don't think you'd save money. Maybe. Worth checking out. From what I see, the only way DIY is any cheaper then a real good light is if you actually DIY. Beginning to end.
A Blondes Cree 3590 top-bin pre-made fixture w/ nice reflectors & Meanwell drivers only costs $2 a watt. One of the very best lights out IMO is Amare on sale (always) is only $2 a watt & it comes with monos & some have UVB. All different sizes & shapes too. Buying one of those kits is actually allot more money after labor & extra material. But being able to retro-fit the design into your grow room is cool I guess. Far cry from a real DIY though.
If you wanna get growing though & $2 a watt is your price range, I'd feffinetly recommend checking out one of the companies I mentioned above! Plug n Play!

The drivers have built in potentiometers so I won't have to buy those and I would have 1200 watts of led power. It looks like I would have to run the drivers on there own 20 amp fuse because they draw 16.7 amps . Unless I'm looking at it wrong ?

Thanks BM9AGS and Hybridway for the suggestions. I think I am now going to move forward on some Northern Grow Photon 180's. Definitely like that they are a more affordable option than BD.
I would like to do a whole DIY light console at some point but right now I need something a bit more plug and play.
I might would consider an Amare later down the line too but these Photons look the bees knees.
One thing I am kinda hung up on is the selection between a Vero 29; Citizen 1818, 1825; or the CXB3590 and the right spectrum for these offerings? I already posed the question on the grow journal for kmog33 using the lights and for Robincnn of Northern Grow Lights. I would be using the light for both veg and flower.

Wish I could help but I don't do DIY. Some of these guys here do though & should be able to.
I know 24 good COBs can grow some work. Ha! 36sq'?
One observation though is about amps drawn. If you run off 220v you'll cut that down to 8amps. My room runs off 220v.

Gotta throw out that Johnson Grow Lights would work out to around $2 a watt as well with the discount they offer through this site.

The only thing you have to do with the timber grow lights is screw them into the metal cob hangers. It don't say on there but they have an adjustable frame for 20 bucks that they will send you. So for 300 watts of 3950cxb 6 cobs ran at 50 watts is is 620 bucks . So I could run 600 watts of cobs in 2 of those kits for roughly the same price as one of your plug and play lights with a lot more watts ? Why do you think the other is better ? I'm not saying your wrong. I'm just asking why that light is better ?

I believe a light should have a veg & flower mode. Each aspect of your grow is just as important as the next. I feel it's important to have the proper spectrum for veg & for flower. 35k veg is a compromise in my eyes. But those are nice lights for a small space & modular.
I'm all about plug n play w/ warranty myself. Same price or less too.
