i am doing some expanding . i will be veg in a space that is 8 by 4 soon . when i used to do a space that big i used to pump 2000 watts and murder the electric bill . now i will be using 2 of these led hoods . total electric draw will be . 272 watts . im sure they will not grow as fast as the powerful 2k watt mh but who cares . heat is not an issue i am in a 4000 square foot area . yes the led sit about 2 inches above the tops of the plants . my room i keep it cold for better root growth my opinion only its 74 f there is a fan blowing across the top of the plants no chance of burning . i put my hand directly on the bulb i feel 0 heat . the foot print of 1 of these lights 2 or 3 inches above is a bit bigger then the light about 4.5 wide and 2.5 .
That will be interesting to see how they preform compared to 2000 w, yes pretty sure there will be a difference but how much? Keep us posted, this lighting thing has become quite confusing the more I read, I think my brain exploded last night from researching shit :(.

day 2 . plants responding well to the led tubes . I will update in 3 more days see if they get the desired growth . I think they actually like the led tubes better then the mh 400 watt I had on top of it . keep in mind the lights now are much closer getting mabe 2 times the intensity .

were all good ! . hey i have an experiment going . . i hit he homedepot and bought a fixture for a t8 yeah i know t8 suck compared to t5 . any ways . i bought the led t8 direct screw in bulbs . i put 8 of the bulb led on top of the plants . and its much more bright then the 400 mh actually light the room up more bright then the mh ! impressive . led tubes are about 2 inches away from the plants . getting some serious lighting now . here is the experiment . the t8 led tubes . are 5000k saves a lot of juice on the light bill . i can run a boat load of them . they are for shop lighting . so we will see in 5 days if they can grow the plants like the mh bulbs do . it does not say the par or so on and so on . the color temp to my eye is white . they look like t5 bulb color 6500 k to me . go ahead and bash me . in 5 days i will be back to post if they work if so they look like real winners . they pull 17 watts per bulb and put out 2700 lumes i did some math i can run 23.5 of these compared to 8 t5 . same watts and the lumes will be 63529 compared to the 40000 of the t5 . useng 400 watts the mh is 37000 i think off hand and actually only getting 15000 if i am lucky at the height im forced to have it to flood the area .so thats some real savings and improvements . 10 bucks per bulb and the fixture on sale was 75 bucks . 175 plus tax . 3 year warranty on the bulbs and 2 year on the fixture . these have to be a lot better then those mars hydro led lights . who know we will see i used one of those and i was not impressed . i hate pink lights cant see shit .with out glasses .
Who makes the LED tubes you got. I'm looking at some that are only half the lumens of my T5's I'm running now

they are philips , now idk if its worth it to put them into a hood . your lum will not be as good as the t5 . thats why i bought the t8 fixture cheap . they t5 fixture costly . plants are loving the light . i have twice the plants under this light then i did under the 400 watt mh .

you may be able to put in some high out put t5 in your fixture as well . will makes each bulb 5000 lumen and you can get 6500k color any where .

I'm actually looking at eye hortilux and others to see what I can do with a complete T5 grow just for snickers. I tried a start to finish a few years ago and while it grew the plants they wee a bit fluffy for my liking. I only had access to 2700 and 6500 sunblasters which work great for my veg cycles.

I was looking into the hortilux . its expose to have a lot of uv in the bulbs . now this will not make solid buds but it will make stronger buds in the thc .

update. plants are responding well to the lights . I cant comment about led or t5 lighting . I can compare it to mh 400 watt . I am saying its winning the 400 watt mh bulb . the amount of plants I have under this light I would have to have two 400 watt lights going to spread .at the light intensity of the led tubes . also can compare the led tubes to florescent bulbs I would have to have 6. 100 watts bulbs in fixtures to compete with the led tubes . plants are not stretching they look like they will have very tight nodes .LOOKING LIKE WINNERS

I believe the high output T5 are even less efficient than the regular T5s...
Probably :(. I was looking at lumens as opposed to effiency but starting to try and understand this better re: PAR, lumens, spectrum. Growing for 40 years and just followed the herd, not paying much attention to why lol.

final update . the led tubes made by Philips . they rock ! plants were brand new if you will . they have doubled in size formed 2 nodes these bulbs impressed me . saving some serious power and doing a great job ! I wonder how this t8 led package stacks up vs a kind led light that costs thousands . I bet its in the ball park . I am comparing it to mh . so how much faster does mh grow then these t8 led ill never go back to mh its not worth it only when I am trying to grow monster 4 foot veg plants ill turn on the mh not my goal at this time . If you like I will post the model # of the bulbs I bought let me know .

I have a 8 bulb Quantum Bad Boy. It has reflectors and 2 o/o switches. I can run 2-4-6-8 at a time

I am now using 4 white 4 red Transcend Lighting led tubes. They are great, and all the light is aimed at the canopy, BUT, they're @$70= $560 + fixture. Amare Technologies now has a Pro3, which is a single 3ft CoB hybrid bar, said to cover 2 x 4 ($795). I hope to have one soon and do a side by side

Here's a couple pics from under the hot5. Pretty decent, but the Amare will have a lot more umoles and deeper penetration
