Nutrient reservoir

Hi how often should you empty out your reservoir then fully top up? I've read every wk or 2 but also heard people say its fine just to keep topping it up.

I just top mine off. But I'm in a drain to waste set-up. If you top up in a recycling system over time your nutrient solution will become weaker since plants are pulling out the nutrients in the water every time they are fed. For ebb and flo just change it out every other week. If you see signs of deficiency then increase your swap out time to once a week.

I like to replace the reservoir water ever 7 days, it gives me something to do and I'm a clean freak. I used to do it every five days in veg, but since I'm in flower my girl is drinking a shit ton of water everyday, so I just top up every two days.

This is a good question, where pray tell would some one find information about this?
The manufacturer or some one not so vested in selling product, like a chart to something?

General rule is 7-10 days. Once you know how a particular strain handles nutes, you can do top ups indefinitely if you want. I've run straight through beginning of veg to harvest just doing top ups when the res gets down to 50%, and I'll let it go almost dry every 2-3 weeks and do a 80%+refill. As long as your not overdoing your nutes and keep a schedule that slowly increases ec then tapers off at the end you shouldn't have any issues. I like it because I can control ec rates better, rather than go 1.4 one week to 1.6 the next, I can go 1.4, top up at day 2 to 1.45, top up at day 4 to 1.5 top up at day 6 to 1.6, etc, etc. Same with the Ec drop at the end.

i change my res and alter nute dosages every 2 weeks, the exceptions being when a plant has nearly depleted the res before the 2 week mark or is showing deficiency.

personal preference.

i use 10gallons a week. i dump and refill every week.

if i used 1000gallons a week, i'd be more prone to just top off and try to save money on my nutes.

I would think it depends on the uptake of water. The first weeks of veg I let it go for two weeks but monitor EC and PH. But they will go through the 100 liter Rez in less than a week when in full flowering mode. Again it's not a one fits all thing IMO. If things start to get screwy with readings, ph drops, EC starts going up or down I change it. I don't typically add back unless I need an extra day to do refill because of time. The most important thing is water temps and root health with hydro IMO, keep the water cool lol.
