Study finds white youth are more likely to abuse hard drugs than black youth
The 12-year study highlights the incongruence between drug use and incarceration rates along racial lines

By now we can all agree that the real target of Reagan’s enduring war on drugs was never drugs, it was African Americans.
But if rising incarceration rates among black youth or the utter failure to curtail drug use is not enough proof, perhaps a new study from Northwestern University on racial differences among drug users will do the trick.

According to the study’s findings recently published in the American Journal of Public Health, abuse and dependence on “hard drugs” (opiates, amphetamine, etc.) are “less common among delinquent African American youth than those who are non-Hispanic white.”

The study was conducted over the course of 12 years and interviewed 1,829 youth (1,172 males and 657 females between the ages of 10 to 18) who were detained at Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center in Chicago between 1995 and 1998.

Researchers interviewed the participants in the study up to nine times through the course of their 20s. In that time, findings revealed that the odds of non-Hispanic white youths using cocaine were 30 times higher than African Americans. Hispanic participants trailed slightly behind, showing 20 times the odds of cocaine use compared to their African-American brethren.

“Those findings are striking considering the widely accepted stereotype of African Americans as the most prevalent abusers of ‘hard drugs,'” said senior author of the study Linda A. Teplin, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

Most notably, the findings of the study highlight the incongruity between drug use and incarceration rates along racial lines. According to estimated figures from the U.S. Department of Justice, of the males born in 2001, one in three African Americans and one in six Hispanics will be incarcerated at some point during their lifetimes. By contrast for Caucasians, that number is one in 17.

“Our findings add to the growing debate on how the war on drugs has affected African Americans,” said Teplin. “We found that African Americans are less likely than other racial/ethnic groups to abuse hard drugs. Yet African Americans are disproportionately incarcerated for drug crimes.”

Unsurprisingly, marijuana was the most commonly used drug across all ethnicities. As the participants reached their late 20s, however, alcohol seemed to take over as the substance of abuse.

The Study was conducted with 2,000 people in Cook ? The Study found blacks don`t do drugs but get jailed for drug charges ? President Reagan went after the non drug users and called it the War on Drugs ? NorthWest discovered Hispanics are the Blacks brethren ?

So, 2,000 crooks up in Cook, said they don`t do drugs but are in for drug convictions to the people fighting the war on drugs with non drug users only to discover that Hispanics are Black`s brethren.

That`s gotta be true,....you can`t make that shit up.

So we know the war on drugs originated specifically to target "non desirables" against Nixon and the republicans

We know that black people and white people use drugs on at least the same basis, and according to this study, whites use hard drugs more than blacks, and we also know that whites sell more drugs than blacks, but blacks get jailed 4 times more often than whites

We've spent more than a trillion dollars since the initiation of the war on drugs and there are more drug users/addicts today than ever in American history, combined with the highest prison population in world history

By every metric, the war on drug (users) has been an abject failure

At what point do we as a society say enough is enough?

The point missed here is white youth typically have more "spending" money to play with, i.e. buy drugs with..........no brainer there.

Still supports the fact that whites use more than blacks, and why doesn't the same logic work in reverse?

If blacks use more drugs that are cheaper, like cannabis and crack, why aren't they seen the same way?

Such a sad statement on the US as a society, wow. Not surprising, just sad. I have family that lives in southern Mississippi and every time I visit I come home in disbelief that racism is still alive and thriving in some states, incredible.

While I agree with the theme of your response, we disagree on its effectiveness. I contend that the war on drugs accomplished exactly what it set out to do. It was an overwhelming success.

I meant the goals Nixon and the republicans set to the American public

They knew exactly what they were doing while Joe Public believed, and still believes it's about health concerns

Drug criminalization is about race and about attaining power, they couldn't give a fuck less about anybodies health

I believe it I never seen as many black people hooked on drugs. I even heard about the white power gang in prison they say blacks and Hispanics are the reason for the drug problem meanwhile they are a bunch of fucking junkies every single one I know of. Meth labs not many of them in black neighborhood's and NH and VT making national news for the heroin epidemic meanwhile it's mostly all white people.

Not to mention every black or Hispanic person I ever hung out with mostly just smoked weed of course there are a lot who do heroin and shit just not as many as white people from what I've seen only blacks where a few crack heads in FL but way more white crack heads from what I seen.

Just some reason the cops fuck with minorities more apparently but as for the big time dealers the Hispanics seem to be on top of that for the most part but then you have the CIA so who knows.

I'm not surprised I lived in a drug infested neighborhood and you saw a bunch of white boys pull up in their cars to cop their crack, heroin or weed. Heroin being top dog. Shit even jayzee raps about it in the song "Empire State". State street up in Harlem or upper west side where all the Dominicans be.
