No not unless the ballast is switchable or electronic.

Pick up a cheap mercury vapor light fixture. MH uses the same ballast and socket. Around here any tractor supply store carries them, think there like 50 bucks. I picked up mine at an auction with a 12gpm submersible pump for 2 bucks!

Yeah I was thinking the same thing why not just grow under the HPS bulb the diffrence in veg growth is not that great doubt you'd be able to tell the diffrence :joint::joint::neutral:

Can you let us know how much you end up spending? Some times we, all of us, buy something "cheap" that ends up being more expensive in the long run. Like I built a light for $85 combined part cost but I could have bought a ready made one for less..

alright. i have the 70W HPS over 6 babies. and 1 42W red. 1 23W red. and 2 23W blue...... once i put the blues with the 70W. the plants near the blues started taking off.... ik HPs can be used for veg. but the plants receiving just the HPs dont look too hot. i wish ihad a camera.......

and why cant u just throw a 70W MH bulb into the HPs fixture..... they both use ballasts.... or is that the difference two types of ballasts?

Do not do that, it can lead to power failure, blown bulbs or worse fires. If a ballast does not recomend a light dont do it, they may be able to work but it is not safe (MH and HPS have different electrive requirements)

I have never had a problem running HPS all the way through but i do use MH's or flouros in my mother rooms. HPS ballasts have an ignitor it provides a surge or electricity in the begining to light the bulb. If you plug a MH into a HPS you can cause it to explode.

haha yeah I almost killed myself a few times actually . . . I was building a HPS ballast once and I crosed some wires and it was an electrical explosion. Be really careful you are dealing with some really high voltage. If you want to have some real fun with electricy ask me how to build a corona discharge ozone gen for $20.

ihad to wire up the light i have now so the god dam solar panel didnt control the power... isnt a ballast just to control the power going to the bulb. or a converter of some sort????
