Go with 9 as it will be longer before an upgrade is needed

There is literally a FREE program for everything if you go Ultimate

I use one as a DVR to record TV 8) the program is called MythTV and it comes ready to go (you need a tuner)
Sounds amazing :) I believe you've convinced me to try Linux first.

Apple products appear to be much less headache. I'll pay a few dollars extra to put almost no thought into the computer whatsoever. I just want it to work and never over-complicate my life. Computers are one of the most boring topics I could ever imagine, but that's just my opinion man..

Not me, I enjoy talking about them, used to work in the industry years ago. I got out of it for personal reasons, now I wish I could've stuck it out. I'd have finished my BA and making top $$ by now.

Never to late to go back to school, if you really enjoy that kind of thing.

I don't not do anything fancy with computers. Mostly just online access, read the news or research how to hire a hitman. Prefer plug and play with no maintenance, other than charging the battery.

Eh, I know but my memory isn't what it used to be man. I think I smoke too much pot ;) lmao

I prefer plug n play myself these days, less hassle, I've a lot on my plate with other things I'm working on already. I'm still kicking around ideas though, I may sign up for an online course this winter. Now that spring has sprung, I'm much more interested in establishing my raised beds and gardens.

I personally like 7 better, easier to find what I'm looking for, not nearly as nosey and I'm used to it ;)
you are correct, if you have purchased a valid copy of windows and can prove it, the download is free.

ITA!! nosey nosey nosey! and don't even get me started on Cortana..lol I've had all my drivers backed up to..you guessed it...a backup partition on the dead hard drive. Thanks for the offer, I appreciate that! I think I've got it under control for now but if anything changes I'll let you know :)

@sunni... you are right about Dell being horrible. I downloaded the links they gave me to 'update' my firmware a year ago and it totally screwed everything up. I have no idea how to roll back the BIOS and DVD drive or I would. Since then my hard drive failed and my DVD drive says its not what it's supposed to be. Frustrates the hell out of me..

EDIT: on the DVD drive, not only does it not show as the right one, it stopped working altogether. I'm hoping the new drive will work, if not that's out the window and I'll have to go with an external one.
ya this is why i build my computers. i can get what i want and better faster without the labelled price tag
i personally am not a paranoid windows user, theres ways to turn off things you dont want tracked. ive got nothing to hide, and they wouldnt be looking for shit i would do anyways
but i can understand why people would be leery of 10

i personally just dont like the UI interface. so im holding off as long as i can plus theres a lot of issues and bugs right now.

Sounds like the drive might be on its way out.

Did you try downloading and installing a previous bios version? Dell will have all previous versions on the drivers page. I would not recommend downgrading, but if you think it caused your drive failure, might be worth a shot.

A downgrade might not be allowed either, depending on what was changed, any dependencies etc...

Flashing your bios is something you don't wanna mess up. As long as you have the power plugged in and don't turn the machine off while it flashes the new bios image you should be good. I have bought hundreds of Dell machines for my companies over the years. Never had any issues flashing a bios unless it wasn't performed correctly.

The problem was they directed me to download the darn upgrade, then the rest of the drivers had to be upgraded as well to match the new bios. Unfortunately they had too many drivers for "my computer" that shouldn't have been there,They've 'fixed' whatever cataloging issue they had since then as now only the applicable drivers show up.

Fyi, I checked the device manager and pulled the hardware id string to ID the thing but I still ended up downloading the wrong one apparently because as I said, it failed a year later.

I was a dedicated Dell customer for years before this. Rest assure I won't be spending money on another anytime soon. I just didn't see the point in buying a brand new laptop when I could probably fix this one a lot cheaper.

It's not like I'm going to use it a whole lot anyways, we just bought a 27 inch Pavilion Touch for our den that has a 2 TB h/d and I upgraded the memory from the 8G installed to 16G crucial ballistic sport DDR3 to run Cat's autocad program. It's pretty nice and has tons of power (3.2 mHz)

Yeah their support is terrible. Great replacement policy but you need to know how to navigate the tech support bs to get what you want.

Yes, I told you the hdd was fucked now just send me the new one :bigjoint:

Out of curiosity, I rang dell and spun a story to try get them to send me a re-installation usb drive for free. Worked a treat and only took about 10mins :bigjoint:

Here's what I said. Ring them and say that you just upgraded from Windows 7 to 10 and the computer is now stuck at the dell logo on boot. All that you can see on the screen is the dell logo with a spindly icon thingy. It will not respond to any keyboard strokes other the boot menu and bios settings keys (i.e. no possible way to launch diagnostics).

You also say that you have your reinstall dvd's that you made through Dell's backup and restore utility. This is important. Because if you say you don't have them they may fob you off and say too bad, you should have created them.

Say to them that you run the install disks and 90% of the way through it gives an error that "the system image can't be installed or something". Just play dumb here. It installs fine for about an hour then dies. You've tried this several times now and it's frustrating the hell out of you.

Any issues complain that their backup/restore system is terrible and demand that some form of system restoration method be sent out to you. I didn't need to go this far. I just mentioned, politely, that this was unacceptable and I now have an unusable computer. Done deal, I have my ticket number and the usb pen drive is on the way. No cost and my warranty ran out years ago ;)
