Supplemental UVB lighting (reptile bulbs, etc.)

I've seen this topic mentioned in a bunch other threads, but it would be nice to have the info all in one place, it makes the systems people have tested and conclusions they've made easier to compare.

I'm curious about what brands and strength lights you are using, when you start them in the grow cycle, how long you leave them on for, how close you run them to the plants, and the results you've had.

Currently I have a pair of Reptisun 10.0 23w lights, one at each end of my 2'x4' tent. I'm three weeks into flower, I started them a week ago when the pistols started showing strongly. I started them at one hour per cycle, and each week I'm raising that one hour. I'll continue that until I hit six hours, and then hold that through the end of the run. Since they are CFLs I've been running them similar to others I've done in the past -- i.e. pretty close to the leaves (2"-6"). Not sure if that's too close? This is my first test so I have no conclusions yet.

And random question:
Do you find that the buds nearest the light are frostier than the buds further away? I'm wondering if the plant responds in a modular fashion or if its more uniformly. I've currently got bulbs on either side of the tent (so they don't block my primary light) for my first experiment so I'm curious if the edges will be frostier than the center, and therefor in the future a design with more even coverage would be better?

I can't comment on reptile bulbs. I run a 8 bulb t5ho. I have run it with all blue bulbs and run it with half blue bulbs.

The more blue the more UV you get. I notice more frost with them.

I just ordered some 10,000k plus uva bulbs and some others for my t5 to up the uva and uvb my plants get. They also make a uva/uvb bulb for it but they are $30 bucks a pop.

There was a documented grow on here where a guy grew in a gutted refrigerator. He used a reptile cfl. It was on one of those bendable fixtures. He would move it daily if I remember correctly.

My opinion is that an even source for UV is better than a single bulb.

I think these t5 bulbs would work great. You could get two single bulb 4ft. Fixtures.

Here is the bulbs.

Thanks for the reply. After posting this I realized I was in the general Indoor section and not the specific LED section -- I think this may be more of an issue for people running COB "white light" LEDs, that don't produce any (or much?) UVB light? I've asked Sunni is she could move the thread, we'll see if that happens.

Oh, and the fridge grow is @fishdeth 's (in the micro/stealth section), I've been keeping an eye on that one for sure!

Even if it is an led issue my opinion would still be the same. I think some of the led guys supplement UV.

What light are you growing with?

I just picked up a 3' reptisun 10.0 t5ho bulb and plan on running it for the last 10 to 14 days of flower. I'm going to put between my 2 tasty led t4's.

I'm growing with a DIY COB light I made, 8 COBs -- Cree-3070's; (2) 5000k, (2) 4000k, and (4) 3000k. Vegged mostly with the 4's and 5's, put the 3's on towards the end of veg. The 5's are dimmed now in flower, so I'd guess the whole thing is running at about 350w now.

Sweet.
I wouldn't mind building me one. I've been back and forth on the idea for a while. Electric is cheap here for now. I think I'll wait a bit. New bins coming out and I'm sure they will drop in price.

My ultimate goal would be cobs driven by solar panels. I would want enough to grow vegetables indoors, at least start my plants early.

I found these... They're really cheap 3500K COBs, 12V forward voltage and they appear to work with 1A (the large ones), but they don't specify the max current...

What is truly surprising is the price on them... 8x 12W COBs for 16USD. Who knows if they will perform well lol
That's cool. I meant to respond to this and forgot. Even with the 36 and 72v cree you could still use solar and batteries.

Been tellin folks bout this stuff for years LOL

The Agromax pure UV T5 is the UV bulb you want and you "should" run it "always" I run one bulb in veg (in an 8 bulb fixture) and 3 bulbs in flower ( 3, 6 bulb fixtures) I use a LED bulb that has UV for seedlings & clones

But UV is about potency not frost, tis the deep blues that make frost the 10K to 15K bulbs are great for this with best tested being the ATI Coral Plus

The truth is that most reptile bulbs are a waste of time

you can check my journal for pics of frost :)

@whitebb2727 Well yes, but you'd need a power inverter and you'd have some energy loss from it... One similar to the inverters you'd use for your car outlet to 110V AC and then a driver...

why? if they were worthless, wouldn't the reptiles suffer from lack of exposure?

i use a combo of UVB cfls and t8s.
Had a buddy with a good UV meter that tested lots of bulbs in an effort to find bulbs that would hit the numbers found at the equator. None of the reptile bulbs he tested got er done, they are prolly great for lizards but not so much for MJ
