Purple stems, Anthrocyanins

Now heres a question a few old time growers seem to add sugar water claiming plants love it and say it will increase terpene as well as trichome production now would these plants also have excess sugars and will most likely carry on purple stems? And does the sugar actually do anything since sugar is already in the plant?

Experiments in seedlings given sugar showed increased anthocyanin formation. Sugars not bad but too much will cause problems.

So, yeah, the now excess sugars will start to turn the stems purple. Have you heard of people adding grape juice near the end of flower and saying the purple color turns it purple? It's actually the sugar in the juice that causes it to turn purple on top of the fact that at the end of flower chlorophyll production ends as well.

A plant may find the extra sugar helpfull in flowering as energy requirements may be large but dont go running out to grab a bag of sugar because the leaves should be making enough anyway and is the end product from photosynthesis. Adding sugar seems more like an advanced technique and not somthing i would try till ive mastered the basics.

Right on fun fact! @Kingrow1 yea i figured as well i just been using terpinator which ive seen better turn outs as adding sugar makes me iffy with ant infestatiins and sugar build up which may lead to further issues truly fascinating stuff here

Im not very clued up on adding sugar to plants, advice would have to come from someone whos confident on the subject.
I know growers add a lot of additives and stuff but i feel they are trying to push their plants just that extra bit and unless your a pro i would stick to the basic fertilizers and wait till you are getting maximun yeild before moving on to technical stuff. Yer grape juice might have some validity but really ill just keep it simple and stick to the basics :-)

Well the way leaf and root / source sink relationship.
Plus your explanation of,"When anthocyanidin combines with sugar it forms the purple pigment anthocyanin". Which, being strain dependent to some degree, could be an indication when the plant is wanting a little less light intensity (Assuming all other plant parameters are being met).

I have a Sativa / Skunk that as soon as I go from MH to HPS when flipped - she gets a few upper fan leaves stems get a slight purple color change. I think your explanation fits what I am seeing.

Thanks again
