Lighter bho....help please

Iz all in the weed man. I find Keefy weed makes better colored bho. Also don't blast too much BHO through.

Also be careful... seriously. I just made a batch tonight, using the exact same method I've used like every couple weeks with trim for years. But this time I blasted two tubes so I had a bit of excess butane.
When I waited for what seemed like long enough with the pan outside and I noticed that just that thin little pesky layer of very green butane is left, I brought it inside and put it over some preboiled water with the stove fan on and the Burner OFF. When I STILL had butane left after the water was no longer warm, which is rarely the case, I set the pan to the side on the counter while I went and heated it up again with the burner.

BAD IDEA. I've made bho so many times at this point that I started to think there's just no way the butane ignition point can be met with such small portions of butane so far away from the flame (stove burner). Man was I wrong. While boiling the water again I VISUALLY SAW THE FLAME FROM THE BURNER IGNITE A PATH OF GASEOUS BUTANE ALL THE WAY TO THE SHALLOW LAYER OF BUTANE LEFT IN THE PAN LIKE 6 OR 7 FEET FROM THE BURNER.
BUT the fire ball was nothing, now I had a 3 foot high flame coming out of my tiny little layer of butane that was sitting across the kitchen on the counter........... HOLY FUCK CAN A TINY LAYER OF LIQUID BUTANE MAKE A FLAME. Had I not been in the room my cabinets would have been on fire within the next minute.
LUCKILY I have been trained on how to handle a sort of disaster like this bc I work in a lab and I had it smothered as quick as I could grab the nearest blanket.

That's my story from literally like 2 hours ago. ALWAYS BE CAREFUL MAKING BHO. Do not skimp on being as safe as possible. Crazy shit happens.

The flame did however burn like all my butane and I smothered it quick enough to not ruin my oil and out came some yellow potent goodness anyways lolololol. I lost a bit of yield to the blanket... but that's one way to cure your bho REALLY FAST and exciting like. Wheeew I still have an adrenaline rush. Be safe. Lol.

It's not all in the weed. Good color comes from a good extraction. Granted it may differ in color from amber to clear (I get bright gold off trim).But I'm assuming you are talking about chlorophyll getting into your end product.
it needs to be all dry and as cold as possible. So dry it all and freeze it.

How experienced are you? Not how long you've been doing it how much you know about what your doing? I have another method but it's more advanced than using a tube. But still very cheap.
Never take advice from a guy who has bho fires/explosions. They really shouldn't be giving out advice to begin with. Hate to sound like a dick but come on man

I have a bachelor's degree in chemistry... you fucking ass wipe. I do this for living.
This is the FIRST time I have EVER had this happen to me. I was not being careful bc I'd done it hundreds of times and began to stop worrying about it. I was telling a story for safety purposes. Don't assume I don't know what I'm doing when I've taken organic chemistry courses on how this fucking works down to the science.

I think he was trying to teach us that butane is flammable. And he gave the OP incorrect info before ruining his post. Clearly he doesn't do this for a living if he thinks the color is all in the weed, it also sounded like he purged on stove top.

But let's get back to the original question..
What tricks can be done to help this person get lighter colored oil?
It would help if you told us what you are current method is.
It's mostly all in the PREPARATION if you ask me.

I've heard of a process called winterizing, and that it can involve the use of isopropyl alcohol.

Ok, maybe that wasn't as easy to pick up in the story as I intended.

Butane and all organic solvents that one would use for extractions (besides CO2) are very flammable. Butane being one of the most flammable. "So okay cool, don't light it on fire". But more importantly though, is that each solvent in gaseous form will have a certain point of ignition based off of a certain concentration of the gaseous solvent in the air. As you evaporate your butane, obviously it's going into the air. Some people (myself included) like to use hot water to speed up the evaporation up a bit. Otherwise it takes hours. I'd done this many times before but this time the hot water didn't evaporate the butane enough before getting cold again so my high ass just set the pan with butane on the counter in the same room (the kitchen) but away from the burner. Two yrs ago I'd have NEVER been so stupid but it got to the point where I began to think the "flash point" which is the point the concentration gaseous solvent in the air couldn't be reached that easily and when I turned my burner on stove on, a few minutes later, wtf my pan is on fire and it's like 6 feet away from the burner. I was careless bc I began to think there was less danger than I thought. I'm just telling the story so people who are in my same boat and could be becoming less cautious overtime as they make bho, don't light their bho on fire....



I've been making bho for a while the old fashioned way with a can of butane and a tube. That is without the expensive valved equipment that some people like to use - yes - this helps a lot and can avoid picking up chlorophyll through being able to control the pressure but I'm assuming this person has a glass or plastic tube with a "6-10 times purified" can of butane, a metal screen, and a clamp. The cheap basic setup. With this the only way you can really mess up is by shooting too much butane through the thing so it pulls chlorophyll and other unwanted non cannabinoid/terpene shit off that is not desired for taste (yes this idiot knows how that works). I mentioned that. Other than that, with the tube and metal screen method your only other major variable is weed. Using the exact same method I get all kinds of different colors from different strains, and some strains I notice just don't make nearly as good of oil. Lately I've been making from a newish strain "pine kush" that is SUPER keefy and it comes out yellow every time.

Lots of people make really high quality extractions with it. I don't pretend to know a damned thing about chemical solvent based resin extraction, other than that doing it in the open, indoors, near an open flame, is worth just about an instant Darwin Award! You feeling me? Mr eyebrows?

Please tell me you were not in an apartment building at the time? PLEASE?!

I don't do marijuana extractions for a living no (I WISH.... when legalized in all of the US I'm applying bc that's a big money industry). But at my job I have done research studies that involved plant extraction. That is the concept where all marijuana concentrates come from. That is the concept that started concentrates by an incredibly small group of people before it even became popular. Those people knew about plant extraction and we're like "hey, what if we did this shit on weed". You can do extractions on all kinds of plants to get desired molecules out. In fact cannabis extractions are SIMPLE compared to other methods.

It appears you make a lot of different concentrates and have a lot of experience doing BHO extractions. I'm sure you are better at it and know more than me at it. But I'm just on here trying to share what I know bc this post was dead. WHICH IS NOT NOTHING, obviously. Don't shoot me down bc your full of yourself and abilities to make BHO to the point that every other comment made by someone is just ridulously stupid. Have a bit of fuckin respect.

And in time when a job opens up in the cannabis industry for a job in extractions, i'd like to see you get it before me without any knowledge of organic chemistry or any sort of degree what do ever. You'd be suprised what an actual education in the area can do to boost your knowledge on shit like this. Don't judge a book by its cover, asshole.

To name a few:

Fresher material. Some constituents like anthrocyanin pigments darken as they age.
Early harvest. Clear trichomes produce a lighter extract than do amber trichomes.
Sativas typically lighter than Indicas
Higher ratio of Propane to Butane to limit longer chain molecules.
Sub zero extractions to limit longer chain molecules
Flood rather than soak.
Recover to high vacuum so as to produce cotton candy, which purges the raw oleoresin in bubble thin films.
Fast short final purge in vac oven in a thin film at <115F at -29.5" Hg, so as to not caramelize plant sugars
 
Sorry to butt in, what would be the recommended dryness of the material before you run it? Is it OK to use fresh dried buds, not cured? Will that affect taste or potency?
