I'm doing a pheno hunt at the moment, having grown out 50 Albino Rhino plants from seed to select the best mother. Relatively early on, I identified 7 pants that seemed to have high potential in terms of the characteristics I'm looking for, and took cuttings from each. They all struck, and are doing nicely.
Trouble is, every now and then you get a plant that's a late comer. There's one in there that didn't look like anything special when I took the clones, but over the last couple of weeks has come out of nowhere and just blown me away. Extraordinary bud development, and just covered with trichomes - whereas some of the ones that I earlier thought would be my favorites have very little trichome development at all, or the ones with good crystals have weak buds, and today's the beginning of Week 7 (if you count from the day I flipped to 12/12.) I was hoping for a good indica-dominant mother, and all the indica phenos suck in some way or another.
I don't know how this is all going to shake out, because the indica pheno that was my favorite has actually started to frost very nicely just in the last 48 hours. I still don't think it's going to catch the other one though, even though I calculate I have about 2.5 to 3 weeks yet to go. The first one I mentioned is just covered with crystals; it looks as though it has a small cloud of mist around it. This is the only plant in the bunch that looks like the kind seed companies take pictures of to sell you their strains, if you know what I mean.
It's becoming more and more apparent that this one is going to be much more potent than I thought, and with the very impressive bud development, may well be the one I want to get a mother off of. So tonight I sacrificed a branch with about a 1/4 ounce of beautiful young bud to cut a clone. (Wouldn't you know it... this is one of the few plants that had absolutely no little suckers try to sprout out of the base of the stem).
Question is, I've never cut a clone before off of a plant that had 6 full weeks of flower behind it. If this cutting is that far along, how long might I expect it to take to reveg? Just started Week 7 of flower this morning, and I only sliced it a few hours ago. How long am I looking at with a clone this far along, before she can become a good mother and start having kids of her own? And is there anything I can do to speed it up?
Cutting is about a foot long, with 2 buds still on it, if that matters, and she's getting 18/6 light at the moment (long story, but that's the best I can do for her for the next week or so because of a dead ballast. I can lengthen her light cycle to 20/4 in a few days.) Do I want to nip the buds? If I really put my mind to it, I believe I can probably think of some use for them, if you catch my drift.
Thanks, guys!
