i got lost in youtube and i was checking out all the little cafe racers. it got me really interested in a project of my own. i have an old honda CR500r dirtbike (1984) the year before the government made honda restrict them. its fast and its got some work done to it. definitely fast enough for what i want to do with it. i googled the fuck out of this question but keep getting conflicting answers.. can a 2 stroke be street legal? its loud, its obnoxious and itll be insane on back roads and shit... really light bike compared to most street bikes. i got a cr250r too i could do it with but i dont want to booger it up with lights and shit. any thoughts/ideas would be awesome

I have one just like this. 1967 Yamaha 180.
Two cylinder two stroke.
Took it apart 20 years ago to replace the second gear and never put it back together again.
I was thinking of that cafe racer idea for a few years now you have me going again.

Hearing this thing run brings back memories.

I also have a 76 Yamaha DT400 dirt bike that could be street legal.

A lot of two strokes on the road around here.
Lights, mirrors and street tires are a must have.
might just have to call the dmv.. dammit lol. thought itd be a cool project to occupy my time. my brother got a little suzuki 350 enduro or something.. i want to go riding with him without having to load my bikes in the back of my truck.. i got an old xr600 that needs a carb but i dont really like it but im sure i could use it if i gotta

It did have a nice powerband for a little bike.
I miss those old bikes. With the right sprockets they could really kick some ass.
I used to say (about my 400) I dont take it for a ride, it takes me.

My dad and I collect 1970s kawasaki triples. They're two stroke, loud as hell, whiny as hell, fast as hell!

He's got about 50 of these bikes, maybe only 7 or 8 in working order...

I used to ride the triple 500 to work all the time, she's way more reliable than my 1988 Yamaha FZR 1000.

To answer your ? OP, I believe it just has to be a minimum of around 125cc and have the headlights, taillights, turn signals, license plate. There may be restrictions on muffler type, or emissions though...

Good luck!

I've been thinking about getting on the road once this weather clears... But 2 strokes are definitely allowed on the road, at least here in MI, where the weed sucks and the Mt Dew flows... ;-)

I sold my ninja like 3 days ago, took a 400$ hit on the price but I need more engine anyway I'm afraid if I get a 600 ill get bored with it to fast but a decent 1000cc Is out of my price range

im a honda person, just grew up with their dirtbikes.. i had a few other bikes but i always go back to honda. only had 2 different kinds of street bikes though. had a sportster that i loved and the cbr1000rr.. but you cant compare the harley to a sport bike.. would love to get another harley some day but right now id rather have something fast. if i wasnt a honda nut id go for BMW's sport bike they got out.. its badass.

same price as all the japanese bikes out now too.. 15k brand new and its got a computer with traction control for new-ish riders

I had a 76 Yamaha TT 500 single piston. Had a compression release. Had to line a mark up on the crank to kick start it. If you didn't you would break your leg. It was a beast.

Yes a two stroke can be street legal. It would depend on your local laws.
