finally got temps down with new AC unit -HOWEVER-

I have a radio shack surge protector that is pretty heavy duty and it is grounded. so i plugged in my 600w MH, 6" Inline Canfan, and 8000 BTU Room LG Air Conditioner. so all was well for an hour and it surged. Luckily my electrician was still around so he went and reset it from the basement. I know i overflowed the "ampage" , but is there anyway to determine the amp usage and how much my bedroom can handle? i know it should work, because a room should be able to support at least 1000w, so its like 600w + fan + AC = like 850? maybe? advice?

closet tent grow.

you divide wattage by voltage - typically 110 volts - to get amps - so at 1000 watts you have about 9 amps. a typical household circuit is 15 amps. if your surge protector is tripping, it is either lower than 9 amps -doubtful - or defective - or there are other devices on the same circuit

This don't matter. Doesn't do crap to help amp problem

so i plugged in my 600w MH, 6" Inline Canfan, and 8000 BTU Room LG Air Conditioner.
This would be about 15 amps

so all was well for an hour and it surged.
Cause the wire got hot. Lucky you didn't burn the house down

Some electrician. Was he 12?

I know i overflowed the "ampage" ,
You seem smarter than the "electrician"

but is there anyway to determine the amp usage and how much my bedroom can handle?
Even the 12 year old "electrician" should have got this one right. If your house is new you should have a room layout written on the electrical box. This should tell you what room has what amps. You already "blew" the ckt so you should know which one it is. See if it's a 15 or 20 amp ckt.

i know it should work, because a room should be able to support at least 1000w, so its like 600w + fan + AC = like 850? maybe? advice?
Hire a REAL electrician or get better help

It's not watts your ckt runs on.....it's amps.

You probably have a 15 amp ckt for that room by itself. The AC and light will use almost 15 amps. You really should use only 80% of the full ckt capacity. So the most you can put on it is 12 amps for saftey reasons.

You may need to upgrade to a 20 amp ckt but..................of course your "electrician" should have known this :blsmoke:

haha, thanks for the input, i think its 15 when i checked the basement and altogether i believe i pull like 14 amps, if not more, so yeah i see the problem. My electrician is cool, he doesn't know why i got the AC in my room !! i will ask him what i can do about it when he comes tomorrow. meanwhile, ill just stick with the 300w CFLs (42 ea) (Qty 2). So, should be OK till tomorrow.

You can plug the AC into a real good extension cord and into another rooms outlet. This will solve the problem until you can figure something else out :blsmoke:
