I have found topping a few times makes LST easier and can turn one plant into a bush which yields more if for no other reason then it can veg longer and make a larger root mass. If you keep branches low / tied down and expand out to a 10 or 20 gallon pot through few months of veg you can get a exceptionally large indoor yield off one plant. That being said I'm not sure if topping is required for this process but it does make it easier

I just finished up my second grow which consisted of 3 topped and 1 untopped lady. My first grow I grew 2 topped plants out.

After leaving a plant to do its own thing untopped, I noticed that the buds on my untopped plant were overall much more dense and yielded a significant amount (around 25%) more than my plants that were topped. Even the secondary branches fruited much more dense buds than the ones on the other 3 plants. It's important to note that this untopped plant was left to flower a week longer (9 weeks as opposed to 8) than the other plants due to the trichomes maturing slower. I also did a staggered harvest due to the height and gave the popcorn buds a bit more than a week to ripen up (10 weeks flowering total) and was impressed with the results although I probably could have left the popcorn to go even another week. All were sprouted from seed and were pineapple express feminized by G13.

Considering what I experienced, I am thinking about leaving all 4 of my plants to grow naturally this next grow to see if my results are consistent.

I see everywhere that people recommend topping to increase yields, especially with scrog grows... could the extra week of flowering been what really did it or is there any truth that untopped plants yield more dense buds?
noticing same thing as you dude....my best yields are when,,,bend em over let em go...I def spread em out whole time with metel rings..works nicely..or sticks...def not topping that often...I seen what happens myself

I'm germinating 4 blue dream now and I'm thinking I'm going to leave them untopped this round. The next though I'll try topping and see if it was just my inexperience that hurt my yields.

Topping always hurt my yields. I like 6 ft sativa christmas trees. If you have the ceiling height then I say let 'em grow.

I think this is the factor with a lot of us lol. Also why i think a lot of plants get chopped early. I usually have overlap so I'm never really in a rush to harvest, but I think a lot of growers, especially new ones, are.

Everyone wants the best and yet very few can find the time to actually GET there!

The point?

YOU NEVER go by "time" or "calendar"!
You must learn to "SEE" when it's finished!
Calyx's swollen? Pistils receded into them? Trich's on the BUD all cloudy and a few turning amber ? This where you're in the zone and if your good you look everyday and take them at their prime....

Everybody say's trich's at X % and harvest.
Sugar leaves are not the best indicators for trich's.
Some plants trich's don't amber! The plant will actually die while you "wait" for amber trich's.
Foxtailing of these non ambering strains can be the "sign" of finishing - back to the Calyx - Pistils and Cloudy question.
Some strains foxtail as a normal trait.

The calendar is simply a basic "guide line" and nothing more.
I would say that the vast number of those posting on the forum would be shocked at how much better their results would be if the let it go for at least 1 and some even 2 weeks longer then they think!

Did I put a bug in your head?
GOOD!
Try an extra week and see what I mean!

I was having a convo about this the other day. And I think years ago when I started growing the best advice I got from an old timer was,

"When you think she's ready, wait another week. Then chop."

All it takes is one time of having a plant hit that sweet spot to know what that sweet spot is lol. Still takes time and dialing in to perfect as every strain is a little different.

I've also had plants that went Amber, but constantly through out new growth. Don't think it was every going to stop, and ended u chopping at like week 15 of flower of something rediculous.

I see lots waiting till the whole thing turns Amber and I prefer to pull when it basically stops growing, drinking, and all cloudy with just a dash of Amber.

I wonder if my topped plants were just harvested too soon... The trics all looking cloudy with 20% amber and the pistils were all very receeded.

Is it possible they still weren't ready? Is there another way to know if theyre done?

Last run I had 1 plant untopped, 5 topped once, and 5 topped twice. I liked the way the untopped plant grew and it yielded close to the same as the ones topped twice. I'm gonna tie down the apical stems this run and see how they I like it. Might top side branches on a couple of them as well.

I got some critical kush from kush seeds I'm popping next run @hotshotisdashit

Had they basically stopped putting on mass. The water uptake thing is easy for me in hydro but that to me is a good indicator as well. Hairs basically all withered up and cloudy triches all tell me that they are ready, not individually, but as a whole, that the plants are done then it's a matter of when can I do the trimming, with my lifestyle it's a huge factor. Can't go walking around smelling like pot plant lol.

LOL, I have to mention, in my area I'm sometimes forgetting to bathe before going to the corner store or bar after a long day during harvest. I bring my patients/trimmers (all locals) drinks or out for a cold one......Oh the looks we get! everyone is a local in our tiny "burg" so acceptance is a given for the most part, the girls behind the bar will mention that we had better sit in the game room!

Hmm, I can remember to clean up after working manure......

To answer your question no. Topping yields more if done. Right..

View attachment 3599010
but will take more vedge time, almost twice for same plant height as an untopped one i prefer more plants less vedge and it depend on the genetic too plants giving too big colas is better to top them to make bud site little smaller usually ending up with more tricome and genetic that already small golf ball buds isn't a good idear to top them that's about the main idear behind topping ...

The three a light guys veg alot longer top 5 different times to create beach balls. Its a great concept. The money is made in veg according to them.
