Im about to buy a ph wand and it got me thinking that I dont know exactly where I should have my ph. I usually aim for something between 6.0-6.5 on my color chart. Is that right? My medium is sunshine advanced peat moss.

Your a pretty smart feller. As I stated 5.5 to 6.5 works . All most all elements can be taken up between 5.8 and 6.2 and run on the higher end in late flower. It is best to let PH flucuate for these reasons . The plants them selves will change the PH all so according to what they need. Thats why there is a range.
And yes you are a newb.

I mean, its sunshines #4 advanced peat moss mix. It says soilless, but im not sure how that works. it looks and smells like soil, im not sure what the difference really is but it seems to be labeled soilless

it has no nutrients or buffers in it. just a neutral medium.
yeah but anything other than charged soil is just a neutral medium. does peat moss have a different makeup than the charged soils aside from nutrients?

I'm not sure I understand the question. Neutral is Nuetral. Ph of 7.0 and no nutrients . You can use peat Moss as a water filter . Peat Moss is the old hydroponic stand by medium.

Wow there must have been some fiery words thrown around because some posts respond to others that don't exist anymore. All that is left is that cranky asshole passing off BS as knowledge.

It can get technical, but yes, it is a 'soiless' mix because there is no soil/dirt in it. Just about ALL bagged mixes are soiless mixes. Like FFOF, Roots, Sunshine, whatever. *Top soil* is usually soil, but if it's peat based, it's actually soiless ... technically.

I've always made my own peat based mix, but call it *soil* and treat it as such and not as a hydro medium. I add lime to get the pH in the 6.5 - 6.8 range, use dry organic amendments and treat it much like my raised bed soil garden. Before starting organics I used the same mix, lime and all with Jack's Classic for 35 or so years. Never messed with hydro.

It smells like soil, acts like soil, gets treated like soil, but is technically soiless and gets labeled as such (the Sunshine mix). Just don't get hung up on the technical stuff.
