Hey guys, I always adjust my lights according to temperature at the top of my plants, usually 10-20" away two 1ks.
What I'm wondering is when I'm looking online, I can ALOT of grows where the lights are nowhere near the plants, like way up..what is the reasoning for this ?

Thanks

I've seen lights as you described plenty of times... People are just utilizing the foot print of the light... where as long as the plant remains in the optimum range (distance) from the light.

It depends upon the intensity, the focus of the light. For example, I have LEDs with 5w diodes mounted in reflectors (and, maybe secondary lenses). I have to keep them higher. I have a UFO with 3w diodes mounted on a white backboard (diffuse light) and it can be 2" in from a leaf.

This light meter app for Android has a calibration feature. You could use that to see how strong your light is. Lumens/Lux isn't too accurate for grow lights. But, if it's all you have... You can also spend $25 (US) on Amazon for a Dr. Meter lux meter. The sensor would probably be better than your smartphone.
