My fluorogrow 4 x 4, T5 just arrived. Finally. I have generally gone wall to wall with MH with more than satisfactory results. I tried HPS once with less than satisfactory frost development while I did see a yield increase. Same strains. Same methods. I had seen yield increases every grow anyway without the HPS so I am not sure how much it helped. The advantage to being a newb is the dialing in process, I think. Science tells me the HPS did increase the yields, but also tells me that my HPS lacks the UV that an MH bulb can emit (if its glass allows, my plantmax 600 does).

So the plan is to replace my MH again with my HPS and augment it with the T5 above containing 3 ATI “Coral Plus” and 1 ATI “True Actinic”. In other words, I’ve got the blues.

It will be 3 weeks since flip and they have been under the MH. I have read that a number of HPS flowerers start their process with the MH anyway.

All of my grows have been with the same 2 strains, so I have come to know them pretty well. I do find it sexy when I read about these guys who are experimenting with new and multiple strains every grow. I would argue that it is not a bad idea for a newb to stick with a couple and figure them out, top to bottom, roots to colas….at least that is what I am doing. Of course, I would not recommend this if the strains you started with were crap, but my two are very nice.

Wish me luck. The start...

I'm almost willing to bet your hps is a cheap bulb like I use...barley any blues, I sup this with fluros on the sides or even in the canopy at times. On the other hand you can fork out the extra $ and get a D.E. bulb that covers the blues. I'm confident this will work much better than mh for flowering.

Edit: also look in to reptile bulbs..cheap and efficient varying in intensities if you want to supplement UV.

I think you win that bet . My MH was under $50 too but I am still using the original on grow 5. Gonna at least squeeze out the 10k hours they promise. Yes, kinda frugal.

I switch out bulbs every other grow and you might get by with 3..but by grow 5? the light output and spectrum will be greatly diminished, affecting yield...it's great to be frugal...but at what price???

Lol I have a cheap mh that started producing hermies awhile back! That cost me quite a bit! Idk it's a toss up amount of light loss = end product, the more
Expensive lights I hear work better for multi grows but the cheapos just get cheaper :s

I am running all mh600w this round in a flood table..dam the plants are in flower now 3 weeks and will not stop reaching to the ceiling,100% green leaf and buds

600 HPS is going to be the driver...what is that 85,000 lumens?...compared to a T-5 that is what...30,000ish with light that doesn't penetrate very well? And you're putting the T-5's "above"?

I use 2 X 2 T-5's to start...keeping seedlings close to the light. After about 3 weeks, I never thought of it as something I needed...
Doesn't seem penetrating enough compared to HID lights...after 3 weeks, they get big and need more light than T-5's supply...

You do have a horticultural HPS, right...they have some blue light in them...

Hope it works out for you...extra light helps, but T-5's seem lame with a 600 running...

I always wondered what would happen if you changed MH and HPS every watering cycle...every 3 - 4 days...and flowered them like that?

I find it hard to believe the hps is the reason your girls were significantly less frosty. I grow under hps and my nugs stick to walls. You should look into running genetics that produce that bag appeal/frost we are all after.
Hey Mr Sunshine,
My strains do get quite frosty under MH. I admit limited experience with HPS and there is a chance what I witnessed was not because of the light but I doubt it...everything else was the same. I also believe you when you mention strain dependance and I think my strain reacts to more UV than your wall stickers.
Edit: ...and I currently see more frost already after the MH flower of 3 weeks than they showed after 50 days under the HPS. Go figure.

Why not run everything you have at the same time? Full spectrum and supplement the environment to be ideal at least temp and RH wise..looks like you have enough room..

Mine are done stretching at 3 weeks and I seldom have to raise my lights after that. Mine NEVER double in height in flower like people warn.

I am running the HPS and the T5s at the same time. The HPS was just coming on in the pic.
