Hello Guys,

For the past 2 months all I can think and read about is about the DIY cob....

Thanks forum(roolitup, icmag, thcfarmer, grasscity), SupraSpl, bueno grow, captn and many others for sharing their knowledge.

I'm no electronic newbie, but don't want to despise the important little things.
i'm a car audio sound quality freak, and I've done some DIY installs and projects(i installed the radio, amps and speakers. made more than 1 subwoofer box, and I've built some residential Morel speakers box)
I'm used to the voltage, amps, watts, series/parallel and etc. My brother is an electronic engineering, and in the past i used to help him to build his own DIY 50w guitar amps.
And 10years ago i was the "overclock freak"(CPU) and i was able to pimp the my PC cooling system and it did great(kinda loud but great efficiency).

So, i have some basic knowledge, but i'm looking for advice(that ones you need when you are mounting and wiring up everything together)

What intend to build:
-30x40x90cm stealth build with one plant(running with 2x40w cfl lamps. 3070 will replace it for flowering).
The box is 1400cm², thats 1.3sqft. If we consider 25w/sqft, we got 25*1.3=32,5w.
So 30-35w is have in mind:

-1 x Cree CXA3070 3000k AB bin
http://www.ebay.com/itm/291334951517?clk_rvr_id=926752419963&rmvSB=true

-1 x 30w (40Vdc - 900ma) led driver
http://www.ebay.com/itm/291594482814?var=590636478982&clk_rvr_id=926741057648&rmvSB=true

(cob and driver from the same seller, make it easier and cheaper for me)

Artic Alpine Cooling
http://www.kabum.com.br/produto/68040/cooler-para-cpu-arctic-amd-alpine-64-plus-

I live in Brazil, here ONE U$ dolar is FOUR BRL-R$. So i'm on a small budget.

My main thoughts/doubts:
-I looking for safety and protecting the invested money, so, if running at [email protected], IF on a hot day 40°c/100°F the Artic Cooler or the 12v supply stop working. Whats the risk of burning the cxa3070?

-Buildingn a Kill/Panic button to shut off all the lights and cooling if someone not wanted enters the room. Easy to do, just need to make it. Any suggestions?

-Can i use (almost)"any" good CPU thermal paste?

-Soldering/Fixing/Holder- Thats where i have most doubts. Whats the benefits/risks of soldering? Buying the holders is worth it?

- Should i buy "quality"(and more expensive) drivers like meanwell, or buying "china" drivers will do it ok? Lets say china drivers can deliver 85% of what they claim.....

Thanks for your help,

See ya!

Hi in my reading the Arctic Silver 5 seems to be a good choice.

I dont know the efficiency of other drivers, and Mean Well ones seem to have high efficiency usually 93% and up, and I think that the main reason for the use.

I dont know about that heatsinks ability to cool passively though.

The heat sink most diy prefer for active cooling is arctic alpine 11 plus. Thats what I use and I prefer Antec formula 7 nano diamond thermal compound, any quality compound will work.cpu heat sinks are not ment to be used passively unless stated. If the fan fails that cob will not like it and if it does not smoke, its life expectancy will be reduced. And as far as drivers, you can use "off brand"then always up grade to one with a better track record for longevity! Hope this helps.

I would avoid heat sink paste for high powered leds. the ebay supplier I bought my 3070 from includes a hold down mount for the that screws to the heat sink allowing for the use of heat sink compound which provides better heat transfer. I have been growing with 2G11 CFLs for 3 years now and am getting ready to teat the 3070 for flowering plants grown under florescent. I to am curious if they work well for flowering. I am using a large heat sink to provide passive cooling and running the chip at 1.5 amps. I believe passive cooling is the way to go since there is no fan to fail.I am concerned about the lack of broad spectrum blue light in this led but am curious about the performance in flowering.you can find cheap heat sinks at electronic surplus shops online.good luck with your test grow
