Matching Drivers and COBs

That's exactly it. This is fast becoming the standard smallblock Chevy build sheet around which lots and lots of people are building their panels.

There's a five CXB3590 option as well, isn't there? Wasn't it also very high efficiency, IIRC?
@61.2%
(5) CXB3590 3500K CD 36V @ 1.05A (35.5W ea) $237.50
(1) HLG-185H-C1050 $65
177.5 dissipation W -> 68.9W heat ->
passive cooled heatsink 8268cm² -> 4.9"X36" $70
or
active cooled heatsink 2756cm² -> 3.5"X36" heatsink (for spread) $45 + 80mm fan + psu $10
(5) lenses $20
108.63 PAR W covering 6ft² =
$392.50 = $3.61/PAR W passive cooled
$377.50 = $3.48/PAR W active cooled

Their lawyers probably nixed that lol. Don't want plebes electrocuting themselves and blaming the datasheet for bad instruction....

here's how I feel sometimes trying to sort it out

Yeah they dont want to make it easier for someone not an electrician or at least not a first timer, and get false confidence just to get hurt or burn the grow room up lol.
They know most ppl buying the parts are stoners after all.

Is there a PPfd calculation in there someplace? I'm not seeing a spec.

Meanwell is supposed to be releasing the HLG-240H-C spec sometime in August.

HLG-240H-C700 can run ten 36v emitters, five 72v(178-357v)
HLG-240H-C1050 can run six 36v emitters, three 72v(119-238v)
HLG-240H-C1400 can run five 36v emitters, two 72v (89-179v)
HLG-240H-C2100 can run three 36v emitters, one 72v( 59-119v)

haven't seen this listed for sale yet but it looks like the bees knees

You should also be able to order some directly from Kingbrite in the near future. The price from them is supposed to be about $75 according to the email I got.

~900ppfd over six square feet by my estimations using his numbers.
does that mean edge to edge 900ppfd over 6 square feet?
If I understand correctly, that would kick the shit out of the very best 1000W HPS setup. Am I dreaming?

Honestly, I'm pretty clueless about drivers just now.
me too

6 square feet he will be around 900 PPF yes. So he will be killing it.

No, that's just a rough estimation of the average ppfd within that space. The edges would be lower, though as to how much I cannot say.

A 1kw hps would produce a ppdf figure of about ~3300 in six square feet. So yeah, the plant under the plant would be dead before too long :P

blinded by the light, heh? lol ... well I guess that jibes somewhat with the fairly common ballpark figure of 600W of LED replacing 1000W HPS over a 4'x4'

I'm replacing 800W of HID, in my case 860W CDM, with 800W of COB LED and I'm expecting roughly double the PPfd. A different take on the same performance boost.

EDIT: That's 800W per 4'x6' trellis panel in both cases.

Scraped these PAR graphs from growershouse.com (except the PLC) :

On paper the 330W PLC LED fixture's PAR reads really good compared to 1000W HPS. I'm thinking 600W of LED could exceed the HPS in terms of edge-to-edge
even bright light (an even 800-900 ppfd over 4'x4' would rock, no hps hood delivers that)

Now if you have 36 volt cobs you can run between 2 and 4 on this driver. [reference: HLG-185H-C1400B]
You will wire cobs in series and simply add up the voltages.
It would equal 144V for 4 of them in series, and I have read that this should work for most as they sit a little under the 36V rating.
I've been wondering about this, I could really just run, for example, two Vero 29s (36.8v) [or CXA/B 3070/3590s] and still have the full adjustability? Or would I have to avoid 100%; would it push those two chips to 144v/2 = 72v and kill them?? I don't mind 'wasting' some of the drivers capacity in the mean time (if its safe), it would allow me to upgrade or use for a 4x or 8x project later on.

It sounds like I could also run 3, and 4 (V29s) [but at decreased maximum voltage w/ 4?] How does this effect the chips output/functionality?

100% is ok, but over 100% I have read that current gets cut lower.

Great, this really sounds like a great way to 'build into' my design, and not have to do single drivers. Allows me an upgrade path. V29s, here we go...until some top bin CXB3590s become more 'available' and a bit cheaper maybe.

Just so I'm understanding, I should be able to run each V29 (2x) @ ~36.8v * 1.4a = ~51w @ max (100%)? Is there a way to determine how far it can be turned down to, the minimum wattage? EDIT: 36.8v * .7a = ~25w @ min?

If you plan to run 4 Vero 29 on that driver wait for another response as to if it will work well or not.
I know with the Cree drivers the VF is lower, and will work.
This is why I changed my mind from the Vero 29 to the CXA3070 AB x 4
