No they wouldn't care in most cases, but tomatoes are legal. I tried using the tomato grow, there's no reasoning with them. MMJ is still illegal for most Canadians, and that's the rub insurance companies are using. You wouldn't want legit homeowners insurance covering your legal indoor MMJ grow? How do you think homegrows should be regulated to make sure they are safe? That was HC biggest concern , the public safety aspect. IMO...we all have to have homeowners insurance, why not let them ensure we do safely!they wont ever!!! All I'm saying is, if you experience a "total loss" of your dwelling for ANY reason and have MMJ growing indoors (legal or not)....expect a long fight with your Insurance Co while you're staring at the hole in the ground where your home used to be.

Checkout section 23 of the Ontario Human Right Code. Insurance companies do not have to insure anything they perceive as risk, even if its discriminatory against disabled peeps like myself.

Yeah, rural properties with any acreage they do that for. When my son bought a farmhouse with a barn, they can only get it through one insurer, can't remember the name, co-op or something. They do a full inspection of the property, barns, electrical, pretty invasive if you have an op going.We have a rural property, 1+ acres.
Every insurance company I called in Ontario said for new policies they require a home inspection. The bank said they needed a new appraisal, because of the increase in housing prices. When we refinanced the mortgage 5 years ago the bank sent an appraiser out then as well, so I'm assuming that's been the norm for quite some time? I was actually OK with the bank appraisal because we have done some upgrades to the house, and ended up getting a very sweet number!

Something has to be done about ALL insurance companies. They need to be kicked off the US stock exchanges and all those fucking vampires need to be made NON PROFIT so the CEO's don't get to get rich off peoples miseries.I've always grown my own until this past April. I am a MMAR holder (PPL & DG) covered by the injunction, but was shut down by my Insurance Co.
Without going into great detail of a 5 year long, hard sought battle against my homeowners insurance company, they dropped me for growing MMJ in my residence. This happened just at the start of the Allard trial, when Conroy put an insurance industry expert on the stand, saying that MMJ homeowners insurance policies were available in Canada. This was an out right lie! The only insurance company in Canada (Lloyds of London) issuing those policies, stopped doing so when the MMPR came into effect!
I was eventually able to purchase a homeowners policy through Lloyd's of London, but they insisted that no MMJ be grown on the property...inside or out until a decision comes from Phelan.
I've been in contact with my insurance broker since the JT win, and Lloyd's is staying steadfast, no MMJ grown until a Phelan decision, or legislation from the new government.
So a message to all of those currently growing in your residence, you are not covered for total loss. Please refer to your home owner policies for the "grow ops" clause. Check it out, it's there.
God forbid anything happen to your home that constituted a total loss, but be advised…you're insurance company will fight you tooth and nail to not pay because of that "grow op" clause in every Canadian homeowners insurance policy.
I recommend that you all govern yourselves accordingly…
why not put a recliner, old TV with a PS3 or PS4 and say it's a gaming room when they inspect? when they leave, fire up the lights...but if you had a problem, you wouldn't be covered so maybe that's not a great idea.Canadian homeowners insurance policies in every province all now ask the question "has MJ ever grown in the residence...medical or not?"
Sure I could've lied, but would've had a hard time explaining why I couldn't let the insurance company inspector into that 15 x 15 room in the basement. Trust me, many times since April I've almost fired the quantum's back up, but have held off waiting for Phelan decision.
Oh and fwiw...as I stated earlier, Lloyds of London was the only insurance company in Canada that was insuring MMAR homegrows before the MMPR to effect. Lloyds has assured me that if a Phelan decision goes in our favour, and/or legislation comes into effect..they will once again offer home owners coverage and flip me over to an "active MMJ grow" policy, with the only stipulation of an electrical inspection. I should add, I am paying roughly 25% more in premiums than a typical homeowner policy.
The insurance industry is quite capable of regulating home grows to make sure that they are safe and of no threat to public safety, while at the same time, ensuring those who choose to grow their own MMJ are adequately covered for home insurance purposes.
