I think you should change your lights to COB LED, especially if your electricity costs are high.
Well yes they are, power rates I mean, its Ontario, there's a loss of power charge, they charge for the power they lost through shit lines before I get it lol. I was giving COB's some thought as well and may research it this winter and build one. Kinda busy right now and got a shitload going on getting ready for the big freeze lol. The heat is probably a help from the HIDS now though actually. I'm just trying to find the best light for the girls but have only played with HIDS, T5's, and UVB.

CDM 860W with thousand watt magnetic ballast. Cheap and effective for vertical grows. I'm getting good results, but they aren't the most efficient.

Then, save up your money and get CXB3590 COB LED chips, run them softly and you'll get great light, a bit of heat and substantial power savings. If you're doing it for the hydro bill, install them in your veg first, as it's the part that's on the most.

Hey Budley----I hope you will feel sorry for us poor guys trapped inside and post pics of the great outdoors.

About the MH vs HPS for veg-----once did a little experiment. Running with the 10' tubes under 1K hps and 1K MH. I observed a slight increase for the plants under the HPS-----and I didn't like having different technologies for light (before electronic ballast).

Hey tyy----are you saying you use standard HPS (example horitlux) for veg? If so, is that because the CMH has to be vertical?

I'm using a 2 x T8 shop light for clones, an 8 x 2' T5 fixture for rooters, 400W HPS and a 600W HPS for the next stages.

They then graduate to another veg room with one HPS thouies and one 860W CDM, this helps grow the ladies big enough for the trellis.

LOL, its the most dismal, grey, shit place here in the winter. I live on the water and its a giant white desert, with three feet of ice, and four feet of snow lol. If I lived in the mountains it would be possibly better, but I doubt it, 20' fucking snow banks and not a skier lol. The boys are in Estes now lol. Me and snow have a hate hate relationship lol. So Aleric did you see any difference where the two overlapped or was it just a straight transition? I have a 1000 but am limited to around 1800 watts for the whole shed, pretty maxed out with 2 600's and just built a veg clone room so will be running 200 W of T5's (hope thats adequate) I gotta fix the power thing lol.

Hey tyy----wow, eight T5s. About how long under those? Do you think your process is the best (for you) in terms of maximum profit per year?

Hey Budley-----I've had my share of being cold----I hate it too----- love fl in the winter time though

I if you're asking about the plants between the hps and mh----well of course that is the sweet spot of the canopy no matter hps or mh. The lights were on a mover (love light rail 3s). My one time highly unscientific observations are based of the plants at each end. Electrical Power----the life blood of indoor cultivation.

Hey fandango-----I know what my wife would do-----she would say---" the door on that thing you love so much is SHUT!!---STAY OUT!!

Hey guys---would anyone like to help me think about something? Going to try and get some pics up this afternoon----so I will go do that now---later.

They're the lil shortie two footers, so it takes a pile of them to add up. Yes, it works well. Since it's such a small fraction of the total OP, I don't know how much it affects overall efficiency.

I have better results with MH for seedlings but not sure if it warrants the extra power compared to my, yup 8 lol, 4' T5's, i just got 4 ultra blue coral T5's so will be trying those this run. My exwife got the condo in florida :(. But cant go there so oh well lol. Starting a new strain this week so its gonna be a learning curve and I also may go back to a flooded root zone i stead of sprayers.

WARNING: The contraption below has NOT gone through system verification and test or field tested.

Been thinking about what I would run if limited to a closet or bathtub with say a 600.

100_1092.jpg

All home depot parts except for the panels and binder clips.

27 gallon tote with 3/4" slip pvc (no glue only friction fit.
Drilled and tapped 3/4" hole for threaded fitting (center ends of lid). I didn't like the little bit of wiggle so I added that brace at one end.

100_1102.jpg

Another angle with the panels open. The plants are tied to the lower pipe with double sided velcro.

100_1101.jpg

I could imagine this trellis configuration with bottom branches trained down and upper branches trained upward.

I can imagine two of these facing each other .

The panels eliminates the need for any medium and net cups, etc.

I like! Can you make the trellis bigger? I use those same tubs, but my panels are 6' tall...

Bigger----sure----just use longer pvc.

Don't understand what you mean by "panels 6' tall.

That tote could be DWC, RDWC, aero, flood and drain-----lots of option----with no medium.

About those totes---concerned about bowing?---- any problems with leaks?

I thought about the light proofing----do you really think I need insulation?

A~~~
I figured it would help because of the light intensity my setup provides from tub height to ceiling. Your setup might already have shade there.

I use the same tubs but red lids. I have a shallow black tote on top of each one that covers the lid, the plants sit in the upper and roots are contained. No leaks from the lids unless spray nozzles are pointed toward the edge of the lid. I am hoping to run four and just swap lids with plants to each room depending on phase. I'll throw up a couple of pics tomorrow.
