very low I would say...SupraSPL has a test tucked away somewhere that says diodes, especially over 10w's get hot, quickly. I would say watch the F out if you are in operating mode without a fan...they are not a passive design in much regards...

I have a couple of fans out on my Arctic Alpine 11 plus' and they get real darn warm without a fan at 1400ma. Run at 700ma, the heat sinks get mildly warm but not too bad.very low I would say...SupraSPL has a test tucked away somewhere that says diodes, especially over 10w's get hot, quickly. Arctic also sells replacement fans for like $2.95 if you buy direct from them. I have some replacement fans on order. The AA 11's are in hot demand right now and can be hard to find for a decent price.
Funny to think a year ago these fans were plentiful and 50% cheaper.

The Alpine 64 GT's look to be $9 shipped from NewEgg....@Tim Fox uses these I believe.
There are lots of choices for cpu coolers...just gotta look..like here. Ran a Vero 29 3k @1050mA's on this little glacialtech...10 months so far no problems....

I also have some of these old school Thermaltake Volcanoes there were NOS...meant for Dual Core Pentiums...exactly a pound of copper[about 120 grams more weight than the Arctic 11 +'s] ...found 8 for $30 on random craigslist find.....haven't done much, but they will eventually get some high powered something's

Ya without fan they have very little effective surface area. It probably performs worse than a solid lump of metal would because the air spaces inside act as an insulator, resulting in a higher thermal gradient, higher temps in the center and inability for the outer heatsink to take much advantage of the ambient temp.
Temp droop test with CXA3070 on Alpine 11, passive cooled

I was surprised to when you mentioned something...they have been, $10 forever, even up until a few months ago [last time I checked]....It is October though, the new fiscal year and I wonder if there is a new version going to be coming out since this is the time of year for that crap, Especially since stock seems to be dropping fast....its not like Artic isn't one of the biggest names out there, supply chain problems for the one of their cheapest and most produced heatsink seem on the unlikely side, but possible....guess we will have to wait and see

If you have good airflow In Your grow space I think it would be sufficient personally. A fan pointed to lights and another to plants. Keep temps even and good air circulation. At least in my grow my lovely golden locks are always in the breeze.....except I don't have long hair so I made that up.

There isn't a specific reason, maybe surface area or shape limiting the mounting options from the physical dimensions of the Diode itself...on other types of Arctics.
People like @Greengenes707 and @SupraSPL are almost 2 years into their builds, both using the 11+'s...
They were cheap, easy to mount and with Supra's testing on heat and temp droop...Correct me if I am wrong, just a really good no frills CPU cooler that had a small profile for moderate to large amounts of cooling.
Most cpu coolers will work, maybe not all of the passive types per se....
Using other Arctics is fine with a proper surface area and so are other coolers. Didn't SupraSPL say he like the Intel coolers that @AquariusPanta used on his crowns?
Anyhoo, im done with the history dig up..
I run A11's too, should have bought a few more, especially if they are going away. Shitay!

Arctic is on back-order for the Alpine 11 Plus, but they are receiving their shipment Thursday of this coming week. I was notified this by email because I had placed my order about 2 weeks ago.

The 64 GT's are smaller and lighter than the 11 Plus, and not pre-drilled at the base, so mounting options are not as convenient (not sure if the size and weight matter much functionally in terms of heat dissipation?). I have both in use in my current light, the smaller 64's fit between the drawer slides and the bigger 11's fit perfectly on the rails, I just got lucky.
Two of my fans died because of a faulty ac/dc driver, and I ran to a local computer store parts department and picked up some generic replacement fans... seem to be working fine. They are held in place with very small dabs of silicone glue in two opposing corners, which I suppose I can't recommend because I really don't know what I'm doing and that was all I could think of to hold them in place. If there is any reason that's a really bad idea, hopefully someone will speak up, but you might be able to do that to hold your broken fan in place...
I also have additional fans blowing on my lights, it's a habit from running CFL's and needing to move the heat away from the plants, but since this is my first DIY build, I'm all for extra cooling and I've continued to position them that way.

Arctics 11's are great. I've had some going for years. Very cheap, but some of the highest quality sinks you can get. They work really well for 3070's. But you can work with 3590's on them too.
