Avocado from seed pit

I tried this for months, nothing. Few days later I went out to turn over the compost, sat there in the soil was an avocado pit with a root and small tree. I can't say how long it was in the compost but i'd recommend just putting the seed straight in the soil and just wait wait wait.

Just remember if you get a tree it won't bear fruit. I've got one that's about 22 years old and it makes an "okay" tree but they shed these little swirly things that are a pain in the ass. Go buy a good tree and don't waste all the years that I did with a sub standard tree that's in my back yard. Maybe if you're in a climate like Cali it can be done but mine gets frosted every spring so even if it was grafted (or what ever they do to make it bear fruit) it wouldn't have avocados.

Fair point. Maybe you could help me out regarding Lemon tree's, I have two seedlings growing (slowly) in my bathroom (it's usually hottest room in house) at the moment. Do you think they'll bear fruit, if I keep them inside over winter and put out in summer? I have Ginger growing too which seems to be doing well.

I'd ditch the skewers and just plant the seed directly in a garden or pot. Some cultivars need both a male and a female tree within 100 meters of on another for pollenation. Most trees will take 8 years to fruit so buy a grafted tree from a nursery might be an easier way to go about it. Citrus are usually grafted onto a rootstock suited to your growing area. However I have managed to grow citrus from a seed it took 8 years to fruit.

i herd these dont work to bear fruit they do something to the seeds. they may become trees but it'll be years
This is simply untrue. Trees from seed all bear fruit if the conditions are right, but they wont always be as good as the fruit it came from. It's hit or miss and its easiest to buy grafted trees that are known to be good but theres nothing wrong with starting from seed. You can also try air layering a good tree to produce a clone.

Well, "avocado from the store" is very vague as there are hundreds of different varieties just in Hawaii alone, Most of them were grown from seed. I've grown my own from seed and they have produced fruit just fine.
There might be a few varieties that are sterile but for the most part, plants that aren't fruiting aren't having their needs met. Either due to temperature, not enough light, or not having other trees nearby to pollinate it.
Saying "avocado seeds from the store will not eventually bear fruit" is far from fact.

I'll probably never know whether or not this pit will produce fruit. But, it's doing nicely and in soil now. The plan is to get a cutting still. Now that i type this, i think i may top the plant and graft it so half of the plant is of cloned genetics and the other half is whatever this wants to do. Viable experiment.
