Is it safe to run a 600 watt hps from a heavy duty extension instead of having it going straight into a wall socket? Can I use a double extension and run carbon filter from it asswell or is that not safe? Don't really want to get new sockets fitted

How long is the ext. cord? and never daisy chan ext. cords with lights on them.

you need to work out the watts for each item and see how many watts the lead can take, imo a 600w is low and on most ext. cord from a main socket you will be able to run the light and fan without any problems, daisy chain them makes no diffence

its only when start using more sockets it becomes unsafe


I live in the uk and can use 13amps x 240v = 3120watts
so if I only use 1kw its not going to be unsafe off 2 ext. cords

but using 2kw + may start to be unsafe off more than one ext. cords

if you pull too many watt, it gets hot and can cause a fire

so you play it safe and alway aim to use half the total watts its rated for.

sorry fellow I don't know what country your from and how much power the heavy duty cord can supply, just don't sound safe it you have no ideal what you are doing

Cheers mate I plan on using a 2 Way extension from 1 wall socket think the wattage it holds is 3600 or sumthing like that, lights and filter from that, then running a similar extension from another wall socket for fans etc. What u expect my lecy bill to be around a week, I'm doing nft system, 2 fans, 1 intake, 600 watt hps? Just a rough idea

Cord holds around 3600 watts just need it for light and extractor fan

pumps use very little not even worth adding
fans use between intake outtake fans about 180watts (100w, 80w)
desk fans 60w the pair

600w hps is about 630w

fans = 240 w per hour x 24 x 7 = 40.3 kws per week
(flower) 600w light 630w x 12 x 7 = 52.92 kw
(veg) 600w light 630 x 18 x 7 = 79.38 kw


( my electric cost 9p per kw)
cost per week in veg 40.3 +79.38 = 119.68kw x 0.09p = £10.77
cost per week in flower 40.3 + 52.92 = 93.22 kw x 0.09p = £8.38p

Sounds like the extension should be OK then I could even swap the extractor fan with something else with less watts. Thanks a lot mate your a legend just exactly the information I was needing, my 1st grow so every little helps can't thank ye enough

To add every once an-a-while - use your hand to "feel" the heat of cord and male/female connections - Maybe even have a small fire extinguisher ? Never hurts to be safe
