breeding

ok so i want to make a seed stock for next year to try and create my own strain. i have a pruple x jamaican pearl male that i want to cross with a hindu kush female. the only problem is, all my plants are in the same 5 or so acre plot of woods. i moved to male about 300-400 ft away from my females, do you think this is enough distance to collect pollen without seeding any of my females. i was gonna collect the pollen then heavily pollinate on of the top colas on the hindu kush and hopefully make purple x jamaican pearl x hindu kush ( havent come up with a name for it yet). and then next year start the selection process outdoors, to aclimate it to the weather in upstate NY). do you think this will work?

I wouldn't rely on the pollen to make its way to the females. I'd pull of a few male flowers (when they open) and take them to the females and rub the pollen on the girls.

That should be a good enough distance to prevent much unintentional pollination of your girls. However, I suspect you will get a few stray seeds. Sometimes you get stray seeds on your plant anyway though, just from the wind carrying pollen from God knows where. So I think you're plan is pretty good.

If you want to help keep pollen off all the buds except the one you pollinate then mist all of the plant except the bud you want to pollinate before you do it. The water will help protect the rest of the buds from the pollen. Use a Q-tip to very carefully put just a little pollen on the bud you choose for seeding. Don't use too much.

Yes, the chances of the pollen reaching the females are fairly decent... but if he's really intent on breeding, then he needs to take matters into his own hands to ENSURE that it will happen. What if the wind blows in the wrong direction?

yea it is my first time, but theyres a first time for everything i guess. so you think that 400ft isnt far enough? im trying to find a place that i can put in indoors or something near a window, but this is what i have till then, where they are is all thick brush about 7ft tall. do you think the pollen could make its way through 400ft of brush and into my females pistols? what do you think would be a safe distance to move my male away so it wouldnt pollent my females?

I've got the same issue... 1 male and 3 females out of 4 viable seeds. When the sex started showing I moved the male out of the group, and put him about 200 feet or so away. The wind typically blows away from the main area so hopefully I'm OK. I will be trying the same thing, pollenating with a Q-tip once the male pops. I'm not rying to cross breed, just get a handful of seeds that I can use in coming years, as I paid $70 for 10 seeds and only got 4 viable plants this year.

Question: how long typically from the time the male shows sex until the time he is ready to "pop"? :hump:

Good luck, Phish!

yea i was going to try and collect the pollen in a ziplock or something then cover up one of the buds on the hindu kush and shake the shit out of it. then do that again and leave it for a few hours in the bag then remove. bc since i only plan on seeding one bud the others should be practicly seedless with just the one bud with a few hundred seeds.
