Quick HPS question

anyone ever use the 70 watt HPS security lights from home depot? I hear it's hard wired so you have to splice the wire and attach an outlet chord... anyone done this? about to go do it asap, what materials do i need?

I would say all you need is the lamp, a good extension cord, some wire cutters and electrical tape.

I know its for CP fans but i think the idea should be pretty similar. Keep us posted on your grow. I am thinking of one of those lights as well!

Go get a 10 foot extension gord. (14 guage NOT 16 GUAGE)

Cut the female end off the cord.

Splice the cord open and u will see three wires.

Match them up according to color to the light. Simple as that.

There will be a black a white and a green,
green is ground, so if there isn't a green wire ccoming off of the light there will be a greenish tinted bronze screw on the metal of the light base somewhere, you will need to hook up the wire to that

thanks a lot guys, i ended up reading more posts and ordered a 150 watt HPS from HTG for THE SAME PRICE, unbelievable... been flowering under CFL's for a while, very slow process, can't wait to see the difference in lighting capabilities.

Oh u will see a difference, but u may want to keep using the CFL's too.

yeah, investing in a light was definitely a good idea, i'm growing in a wooden grow box that just barely fits the light way up at the top so it's right up against the wooden top... think this is a fire hazard? i have an air conditioner nearby that controls the temperature very well, and i have good ventilation. i've got three plants growing under the hps (comes tomorrow, very fast delivery) think i should throw in a couple of the daylight cfls for side lighting? or just stick to the 2700's?

DO NOT use electrical tape, use Wire Nuts and twist the wires together, tape will fail and you will get a shock.

haha what's what i figured, i have a bunch of the nuts sitting around from putting together those T5 light ballasts.

The ballast will have a black, a green, and 4 white wires, each of which will have a voltage on it. Wire them blk to blk, grn to grn and white to the needed voltage. And NEVER tape an electrical connection, especially when dealing with around 3 or 4 amps!!! Use wire nuts. you'll live longer. You can also separate the bulb/refector from the ballast the same way. just get about 10' (or how ever long you want) of 2 conductor wire, and put it in between the mogul socket and the ballast. Again, use wire nuts.
