How much cooler is LED Really?

I always hear the claims that LED runs so cool. I am listening to DudeGrows and they are stating the same thing, but many posts on RIU state that if you have the proper light and watts then it's not that much cooler.

Lets assume you have a 4x4 tent.
Light A) 600w HPS would be standard.
Light B) A true 600w Mars hydro

How much cooler will the LED run? i guess the thing to do would be to seal up the tent and run each for an hour or so and see the temp difference. I imagine that with the 600w HPS temps would be well over 100 degrees.

I think that certainly a proper LED does run cooler than HID, but to say there's very little heat may be a myth.

Any input?

600W actual dissipation will ultimately produce ~600W of heat.

The temperature of the lamps depends on things like the surface area, the airflow, etc. The temperature of the lamp is sort of irrelevant though unless you plan on touching it.

I have a 40x46 inch area. 600w using vero 29's with approximately 70cfm pull at the top of my 7ft box and intake at the bottom gives me about a 10 to twelve degree rise 4 inches below an led.

A true 600w Mars hydro would be more comparable to a 1k watt HPS I believe, or at least one on a dimmer...that's a lot of LED power when you only need 35w~ of lesser quality LeD. I have run several panels though and it seems about 10-12 degrees above ambient is standard

Im no electrician, but my understanding is that the light off the LED isnt too extreme, but the drivers n such crank out heat from stepping the power down.... much like ballasts generate un-thought-of heat when inside the tents

I have the 900 watt (450 true) in a 3x2 tent, the heat from the lights onto the plants is nothing but the heat the unit produces raises the ambient temp in the tent 10-15 degrees at least. And that is with pretty good intake and exhaust setups. If I had the money to do it over would have gone with the hps...

That's great info. Thank you. I guess that the benefit of HPS is that while it is very hot it is easy to use a cool tube or air cooled hood to keep most of the heat out of the tent.

Seems like the remote drivers is the way to go. I'll have to investigate this some. Maybe we should make an LED air cooling apparatus :)

I would have a hard time in my stealth situation keeping the noise down to a non noticeable level. I use a 4" blower and controller. I wish I could try hps. Not good in my old mans hidden grow.

Yeah please let me know if you figure something like that out... Temps here are starting to warm up and I'm having to open my tent and add 2 big box fans in front of the open door to keep my temps even remotely in check... Cool leds my ass

All lights produce heat even LED check out the heat of th mars 1600 watt LED unit and heat is LED number 1 killer failure rates are fairly high when heat is a issue stick a led unit in a sealed box and watch temps climb out the roof and as temps increase spectrum will decrease in some cases
Lets talk about the laws in heat sinks they are glued there is a good faliure rate alone with that for instance if you look at a PS3 unit the heat sink is and all components are glued not soldered there are laws in place that soldier cannot be used anymore LEAD this also has to carry forward to LED units if a company mentions it produces no heat there full of shit the number one failure rate is heat sink issues OVer heating i am curious if there are any growers growing LED that are 5 years old and still pounding out the yields and have not failed yet ???
expect a LED unit to drop performance drastically and fail within in first year.. most companies are what 1 - 2 - 3year warranty ?? there not stupid if there suppose to last so much longer why not 5 - 6 year warranty then ???

Bookmarked.I'll make a sauce for the adidas soon...:-)
And my THREE LEDs are beside two 600w hps ushios,in a 8x4x6 box..the temps rose 4 degrees after..average was 71-73..now its 77.

Anyone know of a digital ballast company with a 6yr warranty?
Me either .found lots of THREE year warranties.
Perhaps its true.not all customers can be satisfied unless YOU lose...:-)
