Am I suppose to veg with an MH bulb?

I've been taking advice from an associate who happens to be in the business of selling clones. He tells me hes going to teach me how to do grow them and not mess it up. Yet when I asked him what kind of bulbs I would need he said I wouldn't need an MH bulb. Just an HPS. This guy knows his stuff. He says he uses an MH on his small clones. So hes vegging with MH. Why is he telling me to do it with a HPS? I'm reading some back and forths from other threads and im not quite seeing a clear answer here.

Personal preference. MH is better for the plant in the vegitative stage, but not required. If you're doing a 1-2 week veg just use an HPS. It will work just fine.

I want to say he said that the veg outline was about 30 days give or take pending the strain. And I could always go longer if i felt the need to. I'd be willing to buy another bulb if it helped achieve worth while results.

MH has UV light that breaks cells down which start the process for rebuilding new cells and growth. HPS has no UV light. You will get results that are close to using MH... It's not like your plants will grow 50% faster and 50% larger... but it does make a difference IMO.

I used to grow using only HPS bulbs for several years and always had good results...
Now I use MH for vegging. HPS for flowering...

The "Gold Standard" of HID lamps is considered to use a MH bulb (bluer color temperature), and HPS for flower (warmer color temperature). It is said that using an MH bulb during veg, and HPS during flower, will result in larger yields, higher potency, etc.

thanks for clearing that up guys. Is there a blue bulb that is suggested? I got the eye hortilux super HPS for flower, is the hortilux blue a good line for a 600watt? kind of confused with all these bulbs, most companies seem to be hit or miss. And hortilux has like 3 or 4 different MH lines.

Hortilux is IMO the best and only bulb to use.

I use Sunmasters Full Nova, way better spectrum than the hortilux blue and alot less expensive.
actually i couldn't find a sunmaster for less than $110, i'd keep digging into it, but I ordered an eye hortilux blue yesterday for $105

He's probably trying to save you money by only buying 1 bulb. I use T5 for clones. MH for veg. though stretch. When stretch is over I switch to HPS. If you plan on continuing you can buy the others later. If you decide to stop you've saved a 100 bucks or so on a MH.

I use 1000 bulbs dot com. I got them so cheap I bought a box of 12. If I remember correctly it was less than 40 bucks each for the yellow blossom which is identical to the old super high pressure sodium bulbs. They only changed the name. I contacted the distributor before I bought them. Because I was making the purchase at the same time they were changing the name. Some places were selling the old bulbs and some the new ones. And if I was buying a box of 12 I wants to make 100% sure what I was getting.

D-35.jpg IMO i threw out all my MH lights for veg MH runs hotter 8 - 10 degrees hotter then HPS i found no difference in growth when using HPS from start to finish or flipping MH to HPS i just find there is no need for MH give them plants good lighting and enviroment and they will grow like MOFO's day 35 from clone and less then 2 week olds from clone HPS grown DSCF2494.jpg

I know may people do this. I've found that although HPS can be used in veg it leads to a longer distance between nodes. So yes they may be getting taller you're also increasing the distance from the flowers to the light later in flower. And the further from the bulb the less intensity. That's why I run my MH through stretch it also decreases the over all hieght especially if your growing a sativa leaning pheno.
I'd have to disagree with you about temperature though. I have a harder time cooling my area with HPS bulbs. Much easier with MH at least for me.

interesting you say that but again i think many people tend to think they become stretchy plants which is not the case in my situation here 5 gallon pail :) if internodes were really far apart buds would not join up this is not the case Picture 472.jpgPicture 473.jpg picture418a.jpg dscf3867s.jpg

You're right those look good. Maybe not having hoods decreases the stretching? I know 10-12% light gets lost in the glass. What strain are they? They don't look like they lean sativa to me.

Well, i went ahead and bought an MH just to have one if i wanted to veg for a while. although I will be using it to veg for about 30 days or so as a standard. Very awesome to see all these different techniques, that all turn into top quality product by practiced hands.
