question about growing in coco

so im starting a DWC grow and i dont have different size pots so i decided to grow in a small pot with coco. can i do that? lol i put my seedling in some rockwool and placed some coco on the base of the pot. i put the rockwool on top of that and covered the rest of it with coco. its about 1/2 inch under coco. since im growing in coco does this mean i have to feed nutes from the start? or just let it ride with only water until about the 2 node?

well ill say this stay away from starting seeds in rock wool the natural ph state of rock wool is 8.0 if that rock wool goes dry on a young seedling rooting system it will fry the seed..

as for the hydro size thing not sure sorry... but yes if your using a no charge coco you need to feed your weekly feed once a week .. like normal.

just so i make suer I'm right.. your setting up a deep water culture with coco in the pots?

i used to always use hydroton when i ran DWC.. but i know people do shit differently... seems like coco would get too moist and would get your water nasty with the drip back into the res.. but like i said i used to run hydroton in anything i ever did hydro wise.

if it pops out should i transplant into the 5gal bucket within about 2 weeks or so?
no i would just make sure the cube stays lightly moist . rock wool is really designed for drip feeds, flood and drains.... even DWC all that matters is the rock wool stay moist and the water thats moisting it is ph balanced because it will balance the rock wool to the water ph.. until it drys or starts to dry then its back to 8.0

interesting, now going back to nutes.... im using jacks classic bloom. its 10-30-20 i believe. do i mix 1/4 the recommended dose at the first watering? or do i give it a week or so? sorry for all the questions this coco stuff is new to me

Is that 100% true that the rockwool reverts back to 8.0?

Not being argumentative, I genuinely do not use rockwool much so I'm interested in this. I'm a budding commercial grower/seasoned mini grower so it's nice to still learn new tricks!

I thought the point of throwing rockwool in PH'd water was to correct it's PH before use. I would think that it would take another PH'ing of the cube to change it (other than a gradual PH change while in use).

Very interesting stuff!

Yea I was wondering that myself.......op did you soak your cube over night to balance the ph because like Phil says they start off at 8 and when soaked over night they will fall to around 6.5-7.........something to do with the glue they use to hold them together(i hate Rockwool)..........coco in Dwc sounds pretty messy to me......I shall keep an eye on and c how you progress......

grodan advertises they are ph neutral but theres been tests done that show, the ph isn't neutral. which is why it always frys plants when it drys.. I'm not sure its 8.0 but its above neutral.. they advertise it a ph neutral system but rock wool thats not wetted everyday or drip fed drys, and fries the plants from ph swings. there was a really good college study thing done here at the Uof M on the way rock wool effects roots when not properly watered... let me see if i can find it. they talked about the ph state and how it was supposed to be 7.0 but it was above 7.5 i wanna say it was 7.8 or something like that.

my goal is to get them in a dwc system. i have it already i only have a 6 inch pot tho. i was told not to drop the germ. seed into that right away. what do you suggest i start a germ. seed in to eventually make it to dwc. i feel like starting it in soil is a mission to transplant into dwc. like having to clean all the roots, sounds fishy to me. so i figured i would start it in a pot using that medium that came with the dwc system. i BELIEVE its coco but idk.. its these pebbles almost like rocks. i could be COMPLETELY wrong hahahaha. help a brother out lol

im super lost at all this you know. i been growing in soil for a while and i like trying new things. the dwc was just screaming my name. i see amazing results with it and i want those same results. so i just got a system that was already made off amazon, i swapped the air pump for one that can work with multiple buckets and all that. it came with rockwool as well so i figured i drop it in that. i germ the seed like almost everyone does. once it popped i put it in a napkin and once it formed a nice root i placed it in rockwool that i soaked in water. i gave it a good two or third good shakes before placing the seed. but i did not leave it over night :wall:... its very disappointing because its a northern lights X big bud seed that i got for free. im really looking forward to hopefully growing it.

hmm if they are little pellets like rocks its hydroton.. that makes sense.. thats why i would use/recoomend... but your right i wouldn't start in a soil to transplant to hydro .. vise versa can be done simply but like you said the dirt on the roots alone will cause a mess..

I'm sure you will make it work......I tried to start a few clones in rockwool to no avail a few times but I use soil and jiffys for seeds and up till now I've had great success with them so I believe in if it's not broke don't try and fix it........I too have that overwhelming urge to do a Dwc or a hempy but I've got my grow dialled in so that I get a harvest every 5-6 weeks and I don't want to upset it......

:) no worries i thought using coco was a bit odd... but i didn't wanna say anything cause everyones so different... :) the minute you described them i knew it was hydroton.. but thats a good thing its what you want in the system your running.. trust me if it was coco you would have had issues with DWC and the runoff from coco...

yeah i googled "what is a coco grow medium" and i was like waaaaaaait a minute, this isnt what i have lol... i believe its leca clay that i have. i woke up this morning and my seedling had popped its head out from under the clay :fire: so things are going good. hopefully they stay the same.

Sweet you'll be good i kept forgetting you were running DWC so your rock wool will always have moisture..
