Small (stealth) grow room and don't have room for everybody, but I have a idea....

Oops! How did that happen?
I've been reading up on about how long to keep my plants in flower. The average time for AKs and PPPs is 2 months. I put them in flower on May 24, so I just realized that two months is exactly on my birthday! I can't think of a better "gift to self" than harvest! bongsmilie:hump:victory dance.gif

Stuff I have used so far in my fight against bugs is...

1. prevention:
-keep the grow space really really clean - no leaves/dead plant matter/dust/food crumbs/ sugar etc at all. remove all waste from near the plants, don't let pets or strangers near your plants, have a separate change of clothes and wash your hands everytime you go in to check on the plants.
-NEVER bring a new plant/clone into your grow from another persons garden without treating it/quarantining it for a while first - this is the worst way to get ganja specific mites and shit into your garden.
-place yellow sticky traps (leaf biting insects are attracted to yellow apparently) in the grow space - check them regularly
-healthy plants can fight off bugs - make sure they have strong roots - so only water after they get a chance to dry out a bit between waterings but never get overwatered/wilted/stressed and control the temperature/humidity cycles.
-use diatomaceous earth (i use an artificial silica substitute) - spread it over the surface of the pot and gnats can't get through the soil barrier and establish their lifecycle
-I plant chives and onions around to repel harmful insects, and have heaps of native flowering plants around to keep the beneficial insects in the yard. I see more predators (praying manti, spiders, dragonflies and lady bugs around my yard than pests

2. essential oils: many plants produce insect repellents or insecticides
-garlic and chilli are easy to get (fresh, hot as fuck chills, I use scotch bonnets). Mince them all up, let steep with hot water for 20min. Strain, and dilute the mix 1/2 with water.
-rosemary oil (add a few drops to hot water, let cool use in spray)
-neem oil (this is this big one, an Indian tree with a safe insecticidal chemical in it) - follow instructions on pack

3. soap - biodegradable, not antibacterial/fragrant etc plain old dishwashing soap - or special plant soap - it kills the bugs but washes straight off.

4. if you really have to, use a pyrethrum based bug spray - i keep this for cockroaches and other evil fuckers

The key thing is to cycle through different control methods over time - these are not strong insecticides like the toxic shit, but if you have enough preventative measures in place the bugs just can't get a foot hold.

haha, , but you know you gotta trim/manicure the plants right? I totally didn't think about that in advance. Its fun, but slow, hard work and my first time took me 4 hours of trimming/taking photos/tasting per 1oz plant - a pro could do ounces/hour. I also ended up harvesting 4-5 colas spaced over the last few weeks so I could map out the high and see how it was changing as the plant matured.

Keyboard diarrhoea again, hope you its easy enough to read. Just be careful when using any information of the net (esp message boards) a lot of it is bullshit passed around the web with no real world demonstration. I can vouch for all the above methods so far, except the rosemary oil - but i hear it works too.

I'm a big reader so I like long threads. Thanks for the two-month premature b-day gift. Awesome! victory dance.gif About the thread--There's already TMI online and here anyway so staying on the same topic for more than 5 minutes gives my mind time to absorb it and remember it when the time comes. I have onions (the green ones, chives) growing in my yard so I can pick those fresh. So far tho, I've only had one scare with bugs and altho I never saw it or them, I saw where it had been munching on a leaf- just one. I think I've gotten rid of all the7-dust that I put on that leaf- that was waaay before I was informed of the poison in it for ppl and plants. Dang! I didn't know. Anyway, since we're on the subject of pests, I have a huge question and I KNOW I"m going to get some shit because of it. I am a smoker, other than weed, of course, but I'm not a chain smoker. I do have my grow box in my room, hence the thread I started about it. So I have no choice but to smoke in the same room as my plants. BUT!! I have window open and a fan blowing fresh Co2 in onto the plants. Unless I get behind the fan somehow and the smoke goes into the fan and onto the plants, I don't see any harm. I was worried that maybe, like they say about kids, my plants are short and sqautty because I stunted their growth. But I have to remind myself that I made them that way. I've been fimming since they got their 3rd node. All but one. I want to see the difference in height if I dont fim it. But it's already starting out behind the 8-ball because the one I chose not to FIM was one of the straglers. It's still really "leetle" but it will be okay. The plants' biggest enemy is me. I can't keep my hands off of them. But they are okay. I haven't lost one yet once it popped. I only hope that the freebies that popped are female like my ordered ones.FAT CHANCE. Anyway, since I haven't seen anything here about cigarette smoke and your plants. Do you know?rasta.gif

I used to lecture at uni so I like talking. and you're welcome.

I won't ask how old you are, because I wouldn't tell you the same ;)

I've been pondering starting a youtube channel about ganja and shit, do you like those?

I have onions (the green ones, chives) growing in my yard so I can pick those fresh.
Sounds tasty, i chuck mine in omelettes and asian dipping sauces, so fresh.

I'm really excited though, my new grow space is big enough for me to start a full indoor herb/veggie/flower patch. I'm gonna put planters in along the walls so the vertical space in my garden gets used too 8)

I got seeds ready to go...

for the kitchen:
lemongrass, mint, oregano, dill, lemon balm, garlic

flowers
poppies, pyrethrum (as an organic insecticide source) and bergamot (for flavouring tea and baked goods)

and growing as companion plants with my schwaggy bagseed ganja babies i've got coriander and parsley nearly ready to pick.

I am a smoker, other than weed, of course ... I have no choice but to smoke in the same room as my plants. BUT!! I have window open and a fan blowing fresh Co2 in onto the plants. Unless I get behind the fan somehow and the smoke goes into the fan and onto the plants,
Well tobacco smoke and nicotine are also insect repellent/toxic. And in the wild ganja would be exposed to all kinds of smoke from wildfires and stress, so a bit of environmental stress can help them develop their personalities and wild sides. A bit of stress won't hurt them, and I did some crazy calculations on how much CO2 we breathe out (so same for carbon monxide from the smoke, which is probably the most harmful thing to your plants) and with your exhaust it should be fine.

I smoke king hemp spliffs that are 60% rolling tobacco. I occasionally smoke at my plants, nothin happens.

But if you think about it, its kinda like burning someone's mother or Aunty infront of their daughter. Get a fan blowing on them, make sure the stems get shaken around just a bit. Toughen em up by making it rain hard, then letting them dry up a bit, super crop them if you wish (I don't). I even raised and lowered the lights like it was the sun getting extremely fierce at noon and then fading away at night. I mess with my plants all the time, treat em like a pet dog. You'd let your dog get stoned with you right?

I was worried that maybe, like they say about kids, my plants are short and sqautty because I stunted their growth.

Genetics play such an important role. My girls are half afghani too, just like your AKs and they were stumpy little bushes in veg, like 15cm tall after a month and the blew up in blossom. But they still stayed 1.5' short

I want to see the difference in height if I dont fim it.
I'm doing a 12-12 from seed experiment with bagseed - one got fimmed and the other got LST, I'll post a pic of them in their new home soon...

I'm old enough say I lived thru the 70's but I was young. Great decade tho.

That's where I'm getting my visual advice. Sounds great!

Thought I was going to have enough for next grow but I had a bad batch and wound up planting them all, sooo I'm going to have to make a clone for the first time in my life. I don't know when, where, how but I know the why? bongsmilie

lemongrass, mint, oregano, dill, lemon balm, garlic

flowers

Oh, hold up, you mentioned something like that. Hmm, I"m lost.bongsmilieDid you say poppies? As in the plant like they have in Afganistan? Are you in Afgan?

and growing as companion plants with my schwaggy bagseed ganja babies i've got coriander and parsley nearly ready to pick.
If you're talking about real herbs, I've got Basil, Cilantro and I forget.bongsmilie I know there's three. They were helping to cammo my seedlings. Now my plants are waaay taller so I had to build a small grow room.

I use to get my cats stoned all the time. You blow it in their ears. They munch all day and do the craziest shit. You know they were keepers of the underworld. Ewwww.bongsmilie

I need to look up 15cm. I'm a girl so I don't always know the formala. That shouldn't matter but I didn' t much use cm in the law firm.

Hey Silky, i've got keyboard fatigue and a lot of stuff to do! I'll let the pictures do the talking for this update

1. seeds for my garden (my poppies are papaver rheas (Flanders Red) not papaver somniferum (the heroin one). and I'm from down under, AUSTRALIA, not Afghanistan - freakin americans !!! :P Coinicidentally our southern island state (tasmania) has the biggest government opium poppy crop in the world producing medical grade opiates.
Chesters veggies flowers and herbs.jpg

2. the 12 - 12 from seed experiment, they are week 7 or day 46 and will probably yield a few gram each - need to transplant them soon. You can see how my FIM and LST worked out too.
flower lights from seed.jpg

3. this is the rest of the schwaggy bag seed bunch - just flipped into 12-12 under metal hailde after 36hrs of darkness (cos I was switching grow caves)
Schwaggy bag seeds flipped under MH 12-12.jpg

4. and meet Taylor, the last of my Ganesh first grow - she's a week or so away from finishing.
Taylor day 54.jpg

I'll start a loungey thread soon to talk about gardening/ganja/the good life - so drop in there - you'll see it pop up in my signature when i do it. I'll start off with a post on cloning - or as i prefer to call it 'propagation by cutting and rooting in media'

cya round and good luck with the grow!

(shit i still talk too much)

No, ya don't I love it. Hey, cool thread. I'm gonna look at ur pics now. Ciao!
Dang, I've never seen an LST and FIM come out looking like that. How in the world? I've FIMed and LST'd but it's still all one size and, altho, short and stout, I don't have a large single cola, especially coming out the side! How'd you do that? Normally, don't they come out the top, I mean in the middle? I'm going to have to think this one real hard. Great Job! Taylor's the best looking plant I've ever seen. Is she a Pure Power Plant? I say that because mine is supposed to have gnarly colas with orange hairs, lots of tricones and purple leaves like that. Have we had this conversation already?bongsmilie I've always wanted to go to Tasmania. Awesome island, kinda like Galopagos, isn't it? Kinda out there---with its own eco-system? Taz is one of your "states"? And the reason I thought you were talking about opium poppy is because there is a thread on here about it. Have you joined in? I'm beat, been a busy day. I'm outta here. Oh, I decided to LST 3 of my girls (again) after I saw yours. Even tho I already had, I didn't leave them very long, like 3 days. Long enough for them to grow wild and wooly. You can't see the stem for all the new growth! That is what I'm after, right?
