My tap water reads 0 ppm....

I have to admit I'm still using an RO system with a kdf-85 filter. However, I don't advocate this, and I don't think it is necessary. It's on my todo list to do a little research and find something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Hydro-Life-52133-HL-180-Disposable/dp/B002UC6VJK/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1428090514&sr=8-15

Again, not advocating that one, just saying I think this could be a better option. RO's do waste a lot of water, and that's something I wish more people would pay attention to. I use my waste RO water to water house plants, outdoor plants, wash buckets, etc.

P-
But why buy this when you can buy a small boy or better yet a tall boy?

So would a small boy with a kdf 85 filter be a good idea? I definitely don't wanna waste water, wait for my water, or at this point spend a whole bunch more mny.

As someone stated earlier, find out from your water company just what they use, if it's chlorine a small boy will get you by, if chloramine it may take a bigger carbon filter of some kind.

I looked up what I think is this years report for my city. I saw chlorine. Don't think I saw chloramine. Goin to reread after the weekend when I have more time.

A tall boy does not come with a kdf filter. You will need to purchase that separately, and it isn't cheap. Again, not really sure if this is needed. I would do a little digging into what is added to your water supply. I'm not sure how rampant chloramine use is. If you are talking the inline hose filter vs tall boy, I would look specifically at price. I'm not sure how long the inline filters last. Maybe the pricing is comparable to a tall boy?

If you aren't worried about chloramine it might be easier and cheaper to put some EWC or molasses in your water and bubble for a few hours before watering.

Again, just some thoughts. Lots of things work for various situations.

This one?

Pretty reasonable price.
I've never heard an ewc tea will remove chlorinamine but I'm not sure of your reasoning on this.

ah my bad, you said tall boy and those are double the price. Probably worth it though.
Yeah, again, lots of things will work for different situations. Depending on your need, maybe a tall boy is better than an inline hose filter? Or maybe you just want to hook up an inline filter to your hose and blast away?

From Microbeman aka Tim Wilson:

One must, of course use water which is free of chlorine/chloramines. This is easily done by putting a bit of molasses, ascorbic acid or a bit of [vermi]compost in ahead of time, which neutralizes these oxidizers.

Peace!

Some cities will give you a complete hydro analysis for free. At Least in my neighborhood.
In my state ( NC ) it is required by the state that yearly reports called customer confidence reports are to be mailed to the customers homes. Having worked in the water industry and managing a 12 MG/D water plant I can assure you that your water is ( not) leaving the water plant @ 0.00 ppm TDS . If your need to know is important to you I would check the water systems web site the info you need may be found there as well or you can call the treatment plant. Is the water included in your rent ? if so the report may be posted in a common area in your complex.

sodium sulfate in molasses neutralizes all the chems except chloramine. . That gets broken down into ammonia and that evaporates 2x slower rate than chlorine. That's from Harvard

Hmmm. You'd think a big fancy school like that would know running thru carbon works better for some of us.

...You may need a liquid camg product. General organics is a good TLO friendly brand. Or extra oyster shell, dolo lime ...
Hi green machine,
.. did you say cal mag?
What about real (raw, organic) coconut water?
Seems the most natural and therefore smartest, Imo

Just reading it has calcium and magnesium, plus:

-awesome source of phosphorus
-and potassium
-not to mention zinc
-iron
-selenium
-sulfur
-b group vitamins
-manganese
-boron
-molybdenum
-plus myco nourishing carbs

All In their natural form, plus cytokinins, natural plant growth "substances (phytohormones) that promote cell division, or cytokinesis, in plant roots and shoots. Involved primarily in cell growth and differentiation, but also affects apical dominance, axillary bud growth, and leaf senescence"

(I think in english that reads more Mary Jane in other words..)

According to Cannibelle who documented her mj over yonder, she uses 3oz per gallon on her flowering cannibis, says its very similar to Superthrive Vitamin Solution but from nature at a fraction of cost.. Flyinhigh from a diff site reps using TBSP per gallon of h2o..

So far so good over here in the Dons garden with it...
plus the Jamaicans rep it..and Polynesians (as picky about coconut as asians about rice) for thousands of years used coco water in their growing.

And here's a wild side note..(according to the UN anyway) it got a chemical profile so close to human blood plasma it was used intravenously and in emergency (soldier) transfusions during WWII

Last paradigm shifting point is that the coconut is the largest seed on earth, and we all know and appreciate the wisdom, power and nutritional content of our tiny mj seeds..I mean a coconut seed has enough nutrition to grow a tree that makes its own trunk by growing huge palm leaves that die off and turn to bark, It's the pairing of the millennium imo

I was gonna like that post buddy, but im not sure im reading it right..aren't chlorine and chloramine both growth inhibitors?

I was referring to how molasses makes the tap water better by basically getting rid of the chemicals so to speak.

chlorine is a catch 22. It promotes root growth but kills microbes . In a sterile hydro setup. Chlorine is ok. Actually helps keep resi's free of slime and mold. .

chloramine, I have no idea. Never had to deal with it.

Great info! I would love to try coconut water and have read many great things. Any tips on way to source and application for best effect?

I rarely use the camg product except to correct the occasional hungry strain. I recently started aloe am exited to use in place of brand name rooting gel

Thanks Greenhomie,
i hear Green coconut seeds are best, brown are seemingly stronger but less viable actually.

Costco carries a brand apparently that other growers use in usa, has one ingredient only, raw, organic coco water. (Green can, pics anyone?)

Just watch for guys with machetes gunnin you down and shitty companies pouring sugars and preservatives/additives, I'm just beginning my research on it..
Other wise I'd help more, bro.

You find something good feel free to let me / us know, thanks!

It promotes root growth!?
Naw, for real?

I hear you on the sterility and mold but shit..

His pen could just not be sensitive enough to give a reading under a hundred or something...or, the sensor could have so much mineral buildup from the generally hard water in CO that it effectively isn't reading anything.
Its a bluelab .and its new.

I just bought a blue lab pen BP2-1502-0726. It does temp and ppm. My res reads 510 ppm on the 500 scale. The tap water at my house also reads 0 ppm. i'm concerned its a problem with the pen. Could any one with a blue lab pen confirm if they can get a non zero reading off of city tap water. i live in ottawa canada.

having problems with cal'ing my pen and google brought me here. The pen cant read that low. look on the box. it has minimum thresholds and margins of error. If i saw that before i bought it i would not have made that purchase.
