I relocated to the Cañon City area a few months ago. We are about 2.5 hours from Denver, about an hour from Colorado Springs, and about an hour from Pueblo.
I have no idea what specialized trade you have but unless it is keeping people in prison it may be useless in Cañon. Cañon city is a small retirement type town with the bulk of remaining jobs being low paying retail.
Compared to Denver/Boulder the cannabis scene isn't that great. Fremont County does not allow any retail stores and only has a handful of medical shops. The quality of those is
ok, but not the bed of Colorado. Clones and seeds aren't readily available like the springs or Denver. Pueblo West are the closest retail shops at about a 30 minute or so drive from Cañon.
Your only chance to work in the industry would likely mean a drive to pueblo west.
That being said, I like the area. We are at the Eastern slopes of the San De Cristo mountains. Reportedly the mountains shield the area from the mch larger snows of Denver and the Springs. I'm sure coming from Maine winter here will be mild by comparison. The views are great, and its a quiet small town that is comparatively affordable. The only major downside is that you will be driving to the springs or pueblo if you want a wide variety of dining, shopping, and entertainment options.
If you decide on this area, and need any assistance feel free to ask.
Oh, and about learning to grow good cannabis, all you need is a grow room and internet access for information. There are great growers here, but they aren't using any super secret grow methods. Anything you need can be found on the net except experience. No way to get that except grow some plants, and you can do that on your own. You will meet people with similar interest that can help eventually. It's Colorado, we got more growers than trees it seems.
