New grow room, need lighting tips

Hey guys,

So I'm making this new grow room. I've always grew in a 2x5 closet with a 400w hps. Now I'm expanding big time and kinda stuck between some lights.

I have a couple pictures up so you can see.

My new setup is 8'x 6', I've never done hydro so it will be a soil grow, I may upgrade to hydro after the first grow.
The height of the room is 6.5' (up to the bottom of the floor joists) the lights can be mounted between the floor joists. so the bottom of the light is flush to that 6.5' at its maximum

I will be putting mylar up to the ceiling, on 3 walls, and will leave the 4th side with only 1 strip of mylar and the top couple feet will be open for air. I am not thinking of putting any carbon filters or anything fancy, just fans. It's in my basement and there isnt anything else down there so I dont worry about smell or anything.

The fleurescent light you see I am thinking of leaving there(let me know if good or bad), currently just have a 400w hps that I will use also. with some cfls
At the moment there is a concern with budget and total power consumption etc.

My idea right now is to possibly buy 2-3 more 400w hps lights to have a total of 4-400w lights(1600w total). found a price online and they are 120$ shipped each for a 400w hps with bulb.
I also found a good deal on a 600w hps, for 220 shipped for 1, comes with mh bulb and hps.

Im very stuck on what I should do and get, if the 600 is too hot, plants cant get as close to it, etc.
If i did get the 600w, i would probably only get 1 of them, could get 2 if thats what you guys thinks is best .

So option 1 ( 4-400w lights) 1600w total (4 lights) would cost me 360$ total

option 2 ( (2 -400w lights, 1- 600w) 1400w total( 3 lights) would cost 120$ and 220$ at 340 total

option 3, (2 600w lights, with the current 400w i got?) 1600w total (3 lights) would cost me 440$

option 4 ( anything better to recommend? )

thankss!

for that size room your minimum requirement is 1kw of power averaging 20w per sq ft. the optimum would be 3kw averaging 60w per sq ft. on a whole with the exception of led lighting, more ballasts are less energy efficient than 1. given the understanding of your budget I would add the 600 giving the bottom end that will still produce awesome buds, and spreading the two evenly. then staggering your flowering to monthly plants. new ones under the 400, the 1month flowered under the 600 till finish. gives you a monthly harvest too :)

Sorry I mis-read option 2, maybe use the same idea but with the the 600 for the first month of flowering then move them under the 2 400's for the rest.

lol i knew you guys would say bigger light, optimal would be 4-600w lights in that space but its just so much power.

swims_gd, your saying get the 600w light and the 400w one? so id have 2- 400w lights and 1-600, im thinking of almost filling up that space with plants that are flowering but i may make a small seperation for the veg plants.

there you go. 600 for your veg room the 2- 400's for your flower. will produce you some pretty decent bud either way. Now you also have the space, take a look at some advance training techniques to get the most out of your lights.

right now im mostly stuck betwen buying 3x 400w lights to have a total of 4, and buying 1x600w light and 1x 400w light, one way i got 3 lights, which one of them is crazier, and the other way i got 4 lights all the same

hell dude, if you can run more then fill it up, just think on a whole though, less balllasts are cheaper to run, so if you can have less but higher wattage lamps. go for them.

ya.. how much are those track things that move the light? lol if i get 3 lights instead of 4, im just thinking its less light for the plants even though one is more powerfull

I'd go with 600's and digital ballasts that can be turned down. That way you can turn them to 400w when the weather is hot and turn them up when it's cooler out.

thats exactly what i was thinking, not much of a price difference between 400 and 600w, such a nice feature to have dimmable. my plan right now is 2-600w hps lights and the current 400 that i have now. the lights im looking at now are apollo horticulture from amazon, got any experience with this brand?

Sorry bout that.....flat white paint with titanium in it is the best. Oth that's that, th orca film or the lack and white film/ Mylar is great. That's the best options. Flat white paint is the best

Yea the behr is ok and be sure there is 10perent titanium in it. Somehow the titanium helps he reflectivity. Also vert lighting creates less hot spots if your able too. Any questions, that's rollitup is for!
