I think you guys should forego the virtual circle jerk and just get the real one over with. Fan boys........that's laughable.

I'm not in the LED business. I'm a hobby guy only but I do know your attitude is shit. You guys are like 6 year old girls when it comes to criticism. Get over yourself.

I was just doing research prior to purchasing. Although I'm not sure exactly what I am going to purchase I do know without a doubt what I won't purchase. So in a way, this thread still served its purpose.

Are you seriously complaining because the prices were lowered for everyone? Would you feel better if everyone had to pay more, except for you? Would you feel better if the prices were raised back up, just so it can be lowered again as a discount, just for you?

You do realize there are many other places to buy LEDs from if you do not like how A51 does things, correct?

As I ALREADY explained…NOT just me, but EVERYONE who qualifies as a return customer, should receive the extra discount that was advertised. So, no…not just me.

NEW, first-time customers, shouldn't expect an additional discount because it wasn't advertised on the website. But previous customers, INCLUDING (but not limited to) myself, should receive the discount that was advertised at the time we made the purchase, regardless of however he wants to lower his prices, in general.

And, the attitude of "If you don't like it, then buy somewhere else." indicates a low-brow, "street" way of doing business, in my opinion. It's not the type of attitude that makes me feel as if my initial purchase meant anything at all to the company.

Yeah, I realize there are lots of places that sell LEDs. I researched them before I made my initial purchase from Area 51. And I based my choice to buy from A51 on several factors -not the least of which was the returning customer discount and the warranty. But I had no idea, at the time, that the discount would be pulled before I could make a second order. Maybe the warranty will change next…? I don't know…but I now see that it could. It's just sketchy. That's all.

So, now, instead of purchasing second A51 light, I will go elsewhere. I'm pretty sure it won't make any difference to them.

When I was about to order my SECOND light from him, I asked him to clarify the price AFTER the advertised discount. He told me that he discontinued that discount and, instead, lowered the prices all-around. -news to me!
I don't agree with your reasoning. Apparently he had planned to give something akin to a volume discount to those who buy more lights over time. Later he decided it wasn't worth the trouble of keeping track of purchase history (or people sharing their discount codes), and just gives his rock-bottom price to everyone.

If you want him to honor the previous "buy another, get a discount" then you should be willing for him to charge you the previous price that was based upon.

You're getting the discount. You're just not happy everyone else is getting it. Most retailers would give you something just to make you feel validated. Jeff is more inclined to let you go elsewhere because he'd rather have customers who don't require a lot of maintenance. Right or wrong, that's the way it is. I'd encourage you to choose which customer you want to be and take the appropriate steps. Belaboring the point won't change this reality.

I'm with you on all that. I've grown great plants with 3 year old Chinese crap before so I'll just keep looking. I do like those Amazon reviews for Platinum LED and I'm sure they're an improvement over what I use now.

Platinum is a name-rip off of AdvancedLED. They use the name Advanced, and the same images Advanced uses. It's obvious they're trying to ride on Advanced's reputation.

The last time I looked, Platinum didn't disclose the diodes they use. I would expect them to be epi-whatever.

I hope you'll be happier with a company that engages in deceptive practices and uses lower-quality parts. (May want to re-think your priorities.).

Yes, I see what he did. And, yes, I'd be getting a discount, but not a discount that rewards my initial purchase from him (which was full-price at the time). And that's what was advertised at the time, so it should be honored -regardless of how low he makes his general pricing, after the fact. I know it doesn't matter to him or anyone else what happens. I'm just relating a disappointing experience I had with the company's business practices -not with the product. The product is great. But, I'll be talking my business elsewhere, based upon my experience. That's the kind of customer I am, I guess! :)

Now you're putting out bogus info. Right on their website it said Bridgelux.

What is it with you guys and your inability to be objective? If the light works, the light works. The company doesn't seem like a dick either in that he is able to answer folks questions without getting butthurt. Just an observance. I don't don't sell lights for a living. I only buy a new one from time to time.

Here you go and once again, I don't have anything in it other than I'm in the market for a new light.

It's a matter of perspective, isn't it? You bought a light at full price like everyone else did. You now get another light at a discount like everyone else did. It's just that everyone gets the discount now.

The only way a grandfathered discount would make sense is if it applied to a grandfathered pricing schedule.

I agree with you that, in the scheme of things, tossing you 10% off would be a cheap way to validate you, avoid all this public conversation, negative publicity, etc.

But, Jeff values low-friction sales. Devoting the majority of his costs toward adding value to all his customers, not giving special strokes to those who need it. If someone's going to spend hours whining that they weren't made to feel special enough, Jeff's solution is: you need a different seller.

It's as simple as that. You didn't get gypped on anything. Every coupon I receive from the grocery store has an expiration date because it's too costly to carry the liability on the books forever (as pricing changes, etc.).

Decide what you want to do and get over it. A51 is not the company for you if you need to feel special treatment. You're getting what you expected when you received your coupon. That *is* the bottom line. If you feel like you should be grandfathered in some special way, you're going to be unhappy and told to find a company that meets your needs better.

The only thing I've seen on Platinum's web site is "Platinum Series LED Lights use only top quality 3w high output LEDs from makers such as US made Bridgelux and Epistar."

That doesn't say what you say it does. If they can't specifically say what diodes they use, I'd assume they're using the lowest-quality diode if they have to list it among the "such as" diodes.

I'm just telling you what it says. I'm not an expert hence why I'm researching. I don't get why you guys are so quick to bash everyone one except Area 51. Nobody else is allowed to make a light worth a fuck?

If you want to trust a company that overtly rips off the name and image of a reputable LED brand that uses Cree diodes, that's your choice. But, it doesn't change the fact that PlatinumLED says:

Platinum Series LED Lights use only top quality 3w high output LEDs from makers such as US made Bridgelux and Epistar
-- http://platinumgrowlights.com/faq
This double-talk is common among LED sellers. HydroGrowLED has a reputation like Platinum's. They use a "LED Basics" page to talk about Osrams, giving the impression they use Osram. But, nowhere on their site do they say they use Osrams.

SpectrumKingLED does something like that with it's "LED 101." They make claims of being 100% more efficient than COB without actually saying that. It's more a "101 generality" in his lesson.

PlatniumLED's language sounds similar. I would definitely view it skeptically considering how they shamelessly try to get a free ride from AdvanceLED's reputation.

But, good luck with your search. I think you'll find A51 was your best value, that there's a price associated with being a needy customer.

If I didn't use A51 I would use Cree PAR38 spots/floods from Home Depot. I just harvested a plant flowered exclusively under these and was very happy with the result. I used only 20-23w/sq ft and got excellent results. I'd shoot for 30-35w/sq ft. But, it did really well underlit.
