Russet Mites

Just thought I would share my experience with Russet Mites. It did take some time to eradicate these little bastards. This info may already be on the site but with Russet Mites any info helps. Have to say they are very tough little insects and seem to move very quickly. I have a strong hunch that my pest came from a local dispensary. Not going to name names. If i were 100% positive I would. Please take a scope when buying clones from dispensaries. A buddy of mine was having the same problem with his plants as I, After a few days he calls and tells me to get my scope and take a close look and no shit Russets. The plants came from the same place. Just saying. What I tried. Mighty Wash was a fail. Spinosad was a fail but did knock them back quite a bit maybe a longer treatment with the Spinosad may do it but I wanted something that would act fast. After hours of research on the web and talking with others I came across a article from a fellow grower so the props go out to him. Sorry I don't remember his name. Wish I did he saved my ass. The product he found is (Worry Free) from Wally world (Wal-Mart). They sell it in a concentrate and a powder. What I did with the Worry Free and did the same with the Mighty Wash and Spinosad. I mixed up the concentrate in a five gallon bucket wrapped plant pots in garbage bags to keep grow media in place and submersed the entire plant in the mixture for five minutes. Hot water. I put two wood dowels across the bucket to set the pot on so I didn't have to hold it and I had three to do. I let them dry then followed up with the powder and a spray mixture of the concentrate for two weeks. Only one application of the powder. These plants were still in veg. so I didn't really worry about the powder. Plants in flower I wouldn't recommend this process. Even though Worry Free says on the bottle you can use up to harvest they are talking about vegetables you eat and can wash off. Not smoke. All that and still had to sterilize my entire grow tent inside and out with bleach plus the carpet in the room. Replace any filters you may have and get rid of any dirt that may be in the infested area. I went all out every item in this room was wiped down with bleach water. I was renovating this room anyway so it got painted and new baseboards as well. Not sure that's necessary but it sure as hell made me feel more secure. That's it gentleman. Worry Free from Wal-Mart saved me who would have thought. Haven't seen any Russets in over a year know. Hope this helps someone. Went 100% perlite Hempy after this ordeal. Less dirt.Less bugs. So far.Snapshot_20130903_1.JPGSnapshot_20130903.JPG

Weird,, never heard of them,, they kinda look like white flies

I wonder how they would do against imidicalprolid (sp?) ,, Merit 75..

I got rid of root aphids with Merit 75 and Evergreen.. I bet Russet Mites would go down with IPM using Imid, Evergreen and maybe some horticultural oil of some sort.. I like rosemary oil.

I've recently had a run in with them. I also purchased the worry free from walmart after reading an article (probably the same one as you read) online. Haven't used it yet but it's on standby.

I just went through broad mites. They were the worst. I thought everything was wrong until I noticed the bugs.

Awesome photos and protocol. I did the same but used 10% bleach solution followed by lukewarm/room temperature water dip to rinse off the bleach then I dipped into peroxide and rinsed in another lukewarm/room bucket of rinse water. I helped another guy out that had some very valuable breeding stock the first time I went up against them and it worked fine but was hard on the plants. I lost 2 out 8. I simply used the cleaning protocol for tissue culture sterilization. Which is like above but also used a quick ethanol rinse first. After these three dips and rinses with cleane (room temp) water there was nothing left alive on the plant. Laborious? Hell yes but worth it in our case. I asked for some russet mites out Denver recently of a strain that seem to be extremely virulent. I will be working with them in the next week. I agree totally with you about the scope. They look like little dabs of silicone caulking to me but your images are the best I have seen anywhere. If you don't mind, I'd like to show them to others. Thanks for posting.
