Former Ontario premier Ernie Eves working with medical marijuana company

TORONTO -- Ernie Eves has gone from politics to pot.

While other politicians tend to join law firms, become consultants or work on various other staid pursuits, the former Progressive Conservative premier of Ontario has chosen to branch out.

He has joined the board of Timeless Herbal Care -- a Jamaican medical marijuana company with ties in Canada and Israel.

But Eves says his medical marijuana work shouldn't be construed as support for broader use and he insists he hasn't sampled the merchandise.

"No, my standard response to that was only for (Toronto Argonauts football) games, but that was about 40 years ago when the Argos were brutal," the 68-year-old says, laughing in a telephone interview. "I could say for (Toronto Maple Leafs) games today I suppose, but no, I do not use it."

Timeless Herbal Care is run by Courtney Betty, formerly a Toronto-based lawyer, and through mutual friends Eves says he got on board.

Eves was Ontario's premier from April 2002 to October 2003 and led the province during some rocky times, particularly the SARS crisis and the blackout of 2003. Eves is on several boards, but he admits this one is a bit different.

"Everybody presumes that medical marijuana means sitting around smoking pot and that really isn't what it's all about," Eves says.

"There's something like over 140 different types of marijuana, which not many people appreciate and different strains are used to treat different conditions and illnesses. I think it could be quite a high-growth area in terms of medicinal use."

Timeless Herbal Care is well positioned as Jamaica steps "ahead of the curve," Eves says.

Jamaica's cabinet has approved a much-anticipated bill of drug law amendments that would decriminalize possession of small amounts of pot and pave the way for a legal medical marijuana industry there. Debate could start before the end of the month in the pot-steeped country where the drug, known popularly as "ganja," has long been culturally entrenched but illegal.

Timeless Herbal Care is not a full-time gig for Eves, who says he visited Jamaica once in his capacity as the company's chairman and met with the justice minister.

Meanwhile, former Liberal premier Dalton McGuinty was hired this week as a senior adviser by business consultants PricewaterhouseCoopers.

I think the problem is the politicians don't think cannabis users vote so they don't give a flying fuck. Would be awesome to set up cross Canada rallies where one could get people to register for voting and then have all those voters in the rallies. Threats from real voters work if the don't think you'll vote they wont give a fuck about you since they already got voters with money lined up but votes is what matters.

Hmm, the pieces of the puzzle may be coming together. As soon as I read this my mind went to the question I've been asking for a while, do these insiders know something we don't know? Why else would any right-minded individual with money invest in an industry (MMPR) that has so many questions (or supposed questions) around its viability? Perhaps these insiders do know something we don't? He's working a different angle but still an insider. The conspiracy plot thickens - lol

I agree GroErr Again more proof of how corrupt our politicians in power are. They go and make it illegal for people to grow there own or have someone grow for them. In the same breath they are talking about this huge capital gain they plan on making for investors off of the backs of the same people who can not afford to purchase from them. Hmmm they must know something or they just have more money than brains????

they must think because we use MMJ that we are too messed up or stupid to see stuff...like the hypocrisy of that. how can either country in North America (or the world if it applies) say it's a sched 1 drug with no medicinal value yet set up LP's and have a medicinal program. that really makes no sense at all. none

don't worry these monolithic LP's are only temporary, most commercial production will move offshore in the near future.. the writing is in the wall..

the scum always seems to rise to the top of the pot....
I'm surprised Mike Harris isn't involved too....but he probably don't need the money....
I do remember Auditor General asking him ...where the 100 million went ...when they tried to
balance their books....right before the election...they lied during the debates that it was balanced...when in fact...they had left 7 billion in deficit.
Bold face liars the pair of them are...
two days... after Eaves lost the election....he told the liberals to stop whining..about the huge deficit the cons had left...the people of Ontario, and get to work and fix it.....friggin blows my mind....

What do you think robocalls was about? Misdirection....people are easily frustrated... send them to a wrong place to vote and they go home and don't bother trying to vote.

I live in a predominated con area and It has been this way...for the last 80 years or so....
and 70 of those years....have been a conservative member from the same family.... name.....
so when they started calling .and they have regularly....you feel the need to go along with them on the phone....and say
oh yes of course I'm voting for the cons....even though you have zero intention of doing so...

its a small area around here....and the people phoning you are dedicated cons....and I would be sure have been compiling a list of who votes what....

Plus as a conservative riding....I live in...really gets the shaft economically...when it comes to
political favors....they have voted for the cons and have been shafted by them every time they have held power,
plus ....when another political party holds the power....the area I live in gets the short end of the stick...due to the fact they are known con supporters and also our area will do its best to hold up any idea's from non con governments.
