Restaurant refuses to serve a black man fried fish!

Our plan was to get cleaned up and beat the crowd to the highly touted fish fry at Treeland Resort.

...

Fifteen minutes turned into 30, and we gravitated to the bar. Lots of folks were being seated, but my name had yet to be called.

“Didn’t that family get here after us?” Rich said.

He appeared to be right, but I allowed how they might have had a reservation.

Another 10 minutes passed by.

Finally, when an elderly couple who had just walked in the door were promptly ushered into the dining room, we both approached the hostess.

...

When she finally looked up, I watched her eyes flash to my right where Rich was standing. Her smile disappeared, replaced by look of sudden realization and alarm.

Rich is African-American. He was the only African-American in the restaurant.

Likely the only one present in the entire county on that particular evening in the fall of 1991.

Just because she rushed to clear a table after she was informed that she has been ignoring these two means nothing. Did they comp a meal or a drink. That would show how truly sorry they were.
Here is a story you should read.

In South Carolina, a BBQ restaurant owner claimed that he was within his rights to refuse service to blacks based on his religious beliefs. In the case brought before the Supreme Court, Maurice Bessinger stated that his religion required him to keep black people from eating in his restaurant, although he was perfectly OK with taking their money, so long as they ordered their food to-go.

Did you read the story you linked to, LF? When did that case go to SCOTUS?

That story was to show the mind of some and how it can still happen today.
If we need something more recent for you we can talk about Paula Deen or Dennys.
How about the ACC basketball ref who said something about "your Egyptian ass", or some such.

Tempest in a fucking teapot, all of it.

Let me get what you are saying with this thread. Are you saying that racism does not happen or it does ?

That is an awesome story full of irrelevance.

Years ago I was attempting to park my car at a big box store. I waited for a person to leave a primo parking space. Just as the space was vacated, another car cut me off and took the space. Being some-what mellow, I didn't want a confrontation so I just got another parking space. As I'm walking to the store I see the woman getting out of the car that stole 'my' space.

I thought, "Fat-assed bitch!"
She shouted at me, "Now call me a nigger."

Years later I still think of that of that incident. Forgiving that woman I have to wonder, did her weight have anything to do with her needing to do anything to get a close-in parking space? I felt sorry for her.

But the part about the "nigger" thing has bothered me for the longest time. That word had not crossed my mind. How often do black people think white people use that term? What must it be like to wonder which of life's unfairness and a person's failures are due to people's prejudices, and which are due to the nature of life and one's own personal short-comings. I guess that word does work magic, distorting people's perceptions of each other.
