What was the reason (or reasons) for the outbreak of war in the former Yugoslavia? The history is so muddled by differing perspectives, it doesn't seem like there was any one definitive reason.

Your doom is already within sight
when your daughter is learning politics

If only it were that simple.

There were 6 republics, and within those there were fractures, still.
It seemed far more complicated than that. Everyone wanted "independence".
Meanwhile, "history" seems to blame Milosevic's "Nationalism" as being the cause. Yet, what is the foundational history? Battle of Kosovo against the Muslims in 1389?

It does appear the Serbs were the biggest shit-disturbers, though, and my memory of that time is the same. But that's where things become muddled. The general of the Bosnian Serbs (Mladic?) had a bit of blood-lust and a hard-on for "combat victory". Perhaps he was the key problem that caused it all to drag on?

However, what started as a Nationalist campaign quickly devolved into ancient hatreds. Milosevic tried to blame the Slovenes in his version. Yet, on the outside, based on propaganda, his "we will not be beaten again" comment seems to be the spark of crisis, after Serbs tried to fake their oppression at the hands of Albanians.

While the impetus may have been "simple", the development and subsequent battles could hardly be considered a matter of mere independence from Belgrade. There were deeper tensions of ethnicity involved, otherwise Bosnia wouldn't have been such a clusterfuck. Granted, regardless of the finer details, the Serbs were the principle "flame stokers" in most (all?) cases.

Did you not claim Albanian heritage earlier? So your perspective would've been shaped by activities in Montenegro mostly, no?

Nationalism, past history, culture, ethnicity, religion... the list goes on and on, each side blames the other.

I personally feel that Serbs (not all of course) are blood thirsty, violent, ultra-nationalist and they are responsible for the Balkan conflict.

also what do you mean by clusterfuck??
Serbs, Croats, Muslims, Albanians... That was the Bosnian clusterfuck.

As I have been digging further, I've been finding this guy was another key figure in the "problem".

Do you recognize him? He's a real douchebag. His paramilitary assholes were even bold enough to flash the three-finger gesture of the Nazis.
