it's fuckin' crazy. i was in the bay area during "the big one". the ground swells under your feet. we were eating at round table and ran out into the parking lot. it was a big loooooong lot. we looked down it and saw all the cars bobbing up and down like they were floating on water. it was crazy. then we had after shocks for weeks. the first week they happened a few every hour. big ones. it gave me PTDS.

Uh uh, that's only if you're sufficiently far away that it shakes or sways back and forth. I was in Uptown Whittier for the Whittier Narrows quake in '87, and lemme tell you what, that was no shaking. It felt like Godzilla had grabbed the building, ripped it out by its roots and was SLAMMING DOWN ON THE GROUND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN! There was no walking or moving into a doorway or under a table, no fuckin' way.

My oldest son felt it, he dug the ride but was pissed he couldn't get any calls out.

that's the part that traumatized me. the OVER and OVER and OVER again of the aftershocks. it made me realize how NOT in control of my life i actually am. i'm scared of a lot of things now.

It happens, we feel our mortality as we age, and if we have kids it just gets even worse. For the first few months after that, any time a train or truck or ANYTHING that would cause that particular rumbling frequency just got me flipped.

Whoa.. brings back memories...
NOAA Images: Southern California Earthquakes - slide 20

Anyone who's old enough may remember the shots on the news channels of a sign that said Quake City, from Quaker City FCU (that used to be my bank), which was only a couple of blocks from where I lived at the time. That was one hell of a shaker.

I was born in California and a few days after I got home some major earthquake happened. It was the 1989 one, where they had like highways collapse. I don't remember it but I get to say I was in one :) I feel cool.
