Which speed controller ?

Hello there everybody : )

Currently im having a problem, my current speed controller is a piece of crap, it doesnt switch back on when the power gets cut off and switches back on so im on a search for some other speed controllers, unfortunately in the country i live im quite limited, i can order overseas although it will take too long unfortunately. I cannot run the fan without the speed controller cause this will create too much noise in my vicinity. My current fan is a 6" inline centrifugal fan which runs on a capacitor ( Permanent Split Capacitor Motor )

These are the options of controllers i can source locally, dont worry about the sites thats just for reference not actually websites im ordering from.

Variac will cost me about 2 - 3 times the price, not actually the right controller for this fan either o and it weighs a ton. Sorry bud thats exactly why i posted 4 options, i did my research, maybe you should too ? : )

After much forum trolling, I've learned two things...

1) If most the serious growers say "Use this one, even tho it costs more" (Variac, Bluelab, Nutradrip) Its because its the best for our purposes.
2) SnapsProvolone is right. Obviously more financially secure than most of us, and blessed with lots of space to play... but don't argue the knowledge, its futile.

I had 2 other fan controllers in the last 4yrs.... Guess what controller number 3 ended up being....
Could have saved money in the end, had I not been trying to save money.
(same goes for hoods! Fuck I got spare unused fixtures I wish I never bought)

The non variac speed controllers fuck up the waveform thus often causing motor groan at reduced speeds. Any speed controller that requires a large heatsink should be avoided in the first place.

The cheapest options aren't the best.

Appreciate the reply, let me say though, i have done alot of reading on variacs and fan controllers aswell though, im not coming here posting topics without any backround knowledge, ive seen that variacs arent the proper ways to control inline PSC motors maybe for other types of motors yes they are very beneficial. On the other hand the controllers above are made to work with these fans.

To my surprise the company that i bought my original controller from actually phoned me this morning and said they will send me another controller which wont have this problem, they also said i can keep my existing shitty controller which is way nice of them.

In anycase im waiting for the shipment but wont have this problem again surely !

I understand what you mean but i will have to disagree, you get non variac controllers which fuckup the waveform and non variac controllers which dont, not going for any controller with a heatsink at all bro, you can also look at KBelectronics speed controller http://www.kbelectronics.com/kbsearch/descriptions/popup_kbwc_23k.htm , i was going to go for this which is the perfect way to control my type of fan, specifically made for a inline PSC motor and its cheap you could pick it up for 20 $, so you guys will have to reconsider the fact that fan controllers have to be expensive to work properly, you just need the proper one : ) You can go buy a 20$ light dimmer and fuck your fan up or a 20$ motor dimmer which is made for your fan and let it run properly ! Peace

I was asking which controller on the list would be most preferable or which one is the best, i didnt ask what type of controller i should use, there are plenty of topics explaining which one should be used... and apparently using a variac on the wrong motor can make it burn up cause some motors arent made to be only voltage controlled they need to be voltage and frequency controlled. I dont think my harvest will suffer without your advice it should flourish.

If I'm not so aged as to have forgotten, I think TORQUE varies when voltage is varied using a variac to feed PSC motor load. THUSLY motor speed only varies under a load, but it's still reduced wattage.... food for thought
