Advantages of ebb and flow over aeroponics

Yeah, I love simplicity

The simpler it is, the less to go wrong :)

Honestly I can't remember what it was. I know is not as much as I should have gotten for a plant that size. But not bad for my first plant. I think something like 6 ounces. I made a few mistakes in optimizing the grow . It wasn't the equipment, it was the strategy. But that's how I learn. :)

I don't think I mentioned but I was out of the growing arena for about 5 years now. Just now starting to rebuild my system and trying a few things differently.

I decided to go with general hydroponics again but with the flora series. General hydroponics really stepped up since five years ago. They have this really nice kit for only around $40.

Includes all sorts of goodies things like microorganisms, rapid start which focuses on route development which is important in aeroponics and so many other things . It actually comes with a feeding regimen from week one all way up until week 9 . They won't admit it but it's designed to grow marijuana. And on this grow I'm going to follow their nutrient regiment to the letter and see what happens.

Again, I don't have much cause I am still so new but the ONE big difference I can say is the ph fluctuation. I know this is a big reason my first grow failed. In the aero, I had to constantly adjust the ph, I'm assuming it had to do with the smaller Rez as well as the constant air injection. With the ebb, I still check my ph up to three times a day, but only because I'm obsessed, lol. When my beneficials are optimal, I can set my ph to 5.9 at a fresh Rez change and it will stay 5.9, maybe rise to 6.0-6.1, by the next change ten days later. I'm currently setting up a tent with aero, I'm really hoping to get it this time. You just gave me a load of confidence when you said I should be able to get it after using the ebb. I'm hoping I just messed the first grow up with rookie mistakes and that hopefully aero is more forgiving than I thought. Thanks for the vids! I'll be checking them out as soon as I post this! Also, thanks for the thread! I've been scared of aero since my bad experience, but trying to explain why they are so different or what the benefits of ebb are, made me realize they are not so different at all.
I think you mentioned this before that larger the reservoir the more stable the pH is. Seeing that Ebb and flow requires a large reservoir it's inherently pH stable for the most part In part to the large reservoir needed. It also can be done in an aeroponic system, just increase the size of reservoir, hence more stable pH. I'm sure the growth medium also plays a part in maintaining the pH but I'm not 100% sure on that.

Very ironic man, I'm using the exact same thing. I started with the performance pack as a recommendation from my local hydro spot. They said it was everything I need as a new grower. I ran through the small bottles pretty quick and wanted to stay on the schedule as I was seeing good results. I replaced all the nutes with gallon sizes and added floranectar, calimagic and diamond nectar. My results he been awesome. I hope to really learn more about nutes so I can make more educated decisions on what I feed the babies, but for now, flora series is killing it and I am more than pleased. Especially because I simply follow the schedule to the letter, like you plan to do. Only thing I did differently is I skipped the second week of light bloom feed and doubled up on the aggressive weeks. Good luck man, I hope it works as well for you as it does for me!

if I was in the market for a new flower setup i would get this system from sentinel :bigjoint:

That's so funny you brought that up. I'm actually in the preliminary stages of writing my Arduino code to manage my system. You know, writing down the outline of a program, what it should do ect.

I was reading over that link you sent and they talk about alarms. That's actually one of the first things I considered to do with my automatic control system. It's basically a timer on steroids. Was even considering on linking it straight to my computer over wifi so I can monitor data live and see a graph. But like I said it's still in the concept stage.

Of course I always gotta prove it works first thing, start simple and then build up on that idea until it morphs into its own soul.

I have a huge electronic supply at my fingertips. LCD screens, touch screens, capacitors transistors resistors all organized in their own bins switches sensors infrared sensors LEDs. I can go on forever :)
Oh yea, and a 3d printer.

Sorry, hope that didn't sound too much like bragging.

Yeah, would be nice if they would increase the size of bottles to match the size of the nutrients. But understand it's more of a sample goodies to get your feet wet kind of thing and that's fine. Already have all those small bottles on my eBay cart ready to purchase when I get some money :)

You haven't bought all the AN crap yet??
Please don't.

From my research, I believe you are correct in that medium does play a role in ph. I'm using rockwool to root in, which raises ph. I soak them in water at about 5.0 and once they are done soaking it goes up to 6.0-6.3. Then in the ebb I'm using hydroton which I believe to be neutral.

That's one of my problems with rockwool. it's unstable and therefore unpredictable. To be succinct "Difficult to maintain a system, when you have unpredictable nomads interacting In unpredictable ways."

as i said i learned hydro on ebb n flow, now im doing DWC the thing about ebb n flow is its simply easy to learn then upgrade, 1 advantage to an ebb n flw table is that you can grow organicly by having felt bags with ur dirt in them ive seen people do that with great success..but aero is more oxegen so yeh it is better but for newbees ebb n flow is a great way to get your feet wet master ebb n flow and then you can move to any hydro and be successfull.

General hydroponics The standard 3 part system. And then along the line somewhere I switch to advanced nutrients. I'm not sure if it's the pH perfect version of advanced nutrients it was five years ago I don't think they had it out then.
hey smoke just lettin u know ive done side by side compares w/ gen hydro nutes the 3 part, nova, and maxi and put them up against advanced, bc, foxfarm, plantlife and a couple other brands gh maxi came out on top every time, nova produced roughly the same but it costs more and stains ur res and the 3 part worked well but total yields were a little less...u might want to give maxi gro n maxi bloom a try they are 1 part nutes way cheaper than the 3 part and actually increase overall yields..dont waste money on koolbloom liquid as it does nothing however the koolbloom powder if aded for the last 2 weeks of bloom will also increase yields, aroma, dried taste, and the plant will finish 2-3 days earlier than w/out it.. i spent 10+ years doing comparisons and wasted a ton of cash just to find out the cheap stuff is just as good or better then the higher priced nutes in the market.believe me i was sure after all i had heard advanced was going to win over gh maxi and i was surprised when total dried weights came in and maxi blew advanced nutes away...actually i thought a couple of the other nutes were going to win but results dont lie in a side by side compare everything the same 25 plants per m/2 same strain everything exept what was in the resevoirs...

What incredible knowledge to pass on, thank you so much for sharing this with us! I've been recently going back and forth with my girlfriend about doing a side by side with different nutes. Thanks again! I'll be trying out the maxi on my next run.

Wow, lots of stuff here that baffles me. I have built many different systems over the last few years and just not seeing what you guys are with the difference between the two. I think the terminology is the first issue. True aero is not a fountain pump and sprayers, which is what I run. True aero is setup with a minumum of 60 psig and mist heads with droplets measured in microns. PH with my sprayers has been more stable, nute uptake seems to be less efficient than E/F with the need to run higher ec. Res size should be based on stability rather than whats needed to achieve a cycle be it flood or spray IMO. As for the use of grow media, they both require something, don't they? I used net pots and hydroton for both. Plant growth for me is hard to judge due to it being my first run but its preforming well. Root development is great. Also I have not had a nozzle plug after the first start up but I think picking the proper nutes helps. I have mixed thoughts about what is better and may go back to E/F. Roots are my main issue now, trying to keep them out of lower res is a problem for me. Any thoughts or tips would be a help, thanks. Also I felt rich this run and decided to try a new nutrient regime, seeing if my cheap A + B nutes preformed as good as a more pricey brand. I chose Aqua Flakes in a side by side grow. The Aqua Flakes plants are a 1/3rd bigger with more side branching. But...... They are pricey!!!! Taste will also be a factor.
