My (not exactly newbie but hey :) vscrog setup

And before the mods get their knickers in a twist about commercial grows...are you serious...commercial? This produces the finest weed known to man, dual metal halide sodium setup with environmental control. Connosours weed...a couple of times per year to produce some seriously good shit, and some fine ass bubble hash.

Dude- Either way i actually want to grow, indoor or outdoor, costs $2800-3200 on paper for my "perfect" grow. So it'll be a while before i get my dream garden.

Your perfect grow, on paper...do it then redo it, then redo it, cos its never perfect! And each time you do it...you find the problems, update, test, produce, update...etc

My advice....stop smoking, growing and find a proper job lol :) :) :)

Ive been slated on a certain uk420 website so I packed up and left.

aero, aqua, fogger ponics...fair enough would produce better results but the law of diminishing returns and this setup, makes coco look as effective as a pair of smokers lungs :) and ****ponics look like an expensive hobby.

thats really good man, what lighting brands are you using? ever thought of adding a LEP (plasma) to the spectrum? its another grand, but its a 300w full spectrum plasma diode, with the real-life situation equivalent grow power of an 800-900w hps..

To be honest, I used to use 2.4kw of metal halide/sodium in a 50/50 mix for the full duration of the grow (4.8kw total) . I used to use Osram vialux bulbs and venture lighting metal halides, nothing at all grow related or specalised....just cheap long lasting commercial bulbs and had amazing results.

Im currently using some old 600w metal halide bulbs ive had for a few years...just to get the cuts, into reasonable plants.

Im gonna buy some sunmaster 400w cool deluxe metal halides and use them with the 600w sunmasters soduims for the duration this time round. 8x600w bulbs is a lot of heat to get rid of and temps were over 43oC and nutrient temps were above 31oC which just basically killed my last grow a couple of weeks in. I needed a rethink.

Im using twice as much light compared to most setups so maybe im pushing them too much. I actually had a light meter and its brigther in there than a properly sunny day in summer. Ill back off a bit I think!

So to answer your question, Ive looked at light frequency charts for the plasma and I dont think for the extra heat and number of bulbs id need to get an even distribution its worth it to be honest. Like I said before, law of diminishing returns sometimes means less than perfect is better.

well first I wanted check, is overcast brighter than a sunny summer day? I know Hawaii and Florida are intense when its mild-moderately overcast.

Im so tired man i saw the gpw and instantly wondered the usual, forgetting you are vscrogging and forgetting the only 3x3 footprint and excessive heat. Which leads to the fact that it seems most your problems came from an inadequate intake/exhaust system causing an excessive build up in heat.

Thats a good rule to always consider, great advice.
 
Ok so lets say something educational about my setup.

I use the VSCROG method, Ive built my frames out of wood, plywood, 5mm correx plastic and a splash of diamond mylar for the reflective parts. The V frame is based on two individual frames I joined together with two Nutriculture 901 NFT tanks underneath with a 5mm correx lid and white-black-white plastic thrown over. There are cutouts for the small rockwool 25mm blocks which sit nicely in them, no net pots or support due to the V frame having horizontal guides placed about 75mm (3") apart.

One tray has 16 UK cheese plants in, the other has 14 big buddah cheese plants in, all taken from two mothers. Shots of the mother room to follow.

Ive vegged up the cuts in a custom built propogator tray which can hold 80 cuts.

Once the root system is big enough the plants go into the trays...this takes a few weeks and I cut the tops of the larger cuttings to even out the growth so they all have the same root mass and number of leaves. Ill cut down the root system too if needed. They all need to be similar to get a good distribution and frame fill.

I use GHE Flora nutrients with diamond nectar and no other boosters or additives. Waste of money IMO. I also use H202 (hydrogen peroxide) in small amounts, approx 0.4mm per litre of 35% h202 to keep things reasonable and a small boost of oxygen to the root system.

The V frame is essentially a single sheet of 18mm marine grade plywood, with 15o cuts, and 35mm PAR pine bolted to it. The rest is simple enough to figure out from the photos but Ill post more up.

I have an airbox overhead with a TD Silent 150 fan which draws wam air from the bulbs out of the frame back to the ground so the whole room tends to be a similar temperature. There is a 1000mm x 315mm carbon filter and a TD Silent 250 (800m3/h) exhausting to a chimney stack. The warm air is vented downstairs which currently heats the house. It also vents on the chimney stack. I also have a ruck fan, I think thats around 1000m3/h as an intake fan with a variac control set to about 50% to keep the noise down. My ventilation is no where near correct. I need to look at this with some urgency....looks good, idea was good, doesnt perform well at all.

Ive got three thermostats in the room. One controls a heater which takes a reading from the airbox over the top of the lights. This keeps the room at a steady 23oC. Another which controls the intake fan and will turn on once the temps go above 24oC and another which gives me the general room temps so I can see if anything is wrong with the extraction, circulation or intake fans at a glance. They should all be similar.

I use various brands of digital ballasts Ive collected over the yesrs but Im gonna swap them all out for lumateks...Ive got three already, each time Ive done a couple of years on a ballast I get rid. I like my warantees and having backs for everything.

The NFT trays use some brand of centrifugal high pressure watercooling pump...I cant remember the name now but they were £70. I Still feel to this day that was a lot of money but they are fantastic, silent, powerful and dont introduce any heat into the nutrient.

I use a valve system using speedfit plumbing to stir the nutrient, feed the trays and a manifold for when I decide to get round to using sprays heads down the length of the tank rather then a single pipe delivery at the top....oxygen is key with roots. The more the better!

The light meter uses a diffuser dome so direct or overcast wouldnt make too much of a difference I think. In the UK, the hottest day this summer right at high sun gave a lower reading than the farthest point from the lights on my frames. The numbers didnt mean too much too me but it was something like 1350 in my frame, and 1013 outside.

Its all subjective anyway, heat, light frequency all play their role so its not scientific but a nice guide.

Yep heat...if I had nutrient coolers, 45oC wouldnt be a problem as an air temp. The tanks when the plants are small absorb a massive amount of light/heat...when the plants get bigger the nutrient temps drop due to the plant cover and leaves absorbing the heat and transpiring...like a evapourative aircon system. Nutrient coolers are next on my list...at £400 each they aint cheap and why Ive avoided getting them. Nutrient temps are currently about 25-26oC which is too warm for my liking but IVe got ceramic airstones and a stirring system making a few bubbles so hopefully while the plants are small and there is plenty of air inside the root tray we might be ok. Im keeping an eye on everything very closely at the minute.

I think the issue boils down to not enough extract. Its 30oC up there, which is fine but thats with 4x600 metal halides on. sodiums give off a lot more heat. I want to stop circulating the warm air from the frames to the ground and instead get it into the filter and out. Id need to build an airbox to house the filter then duct the frame exhaust into the airbox... then have a second duct from the top of the room into the airbox so any additional draw the extract fan has, pulls it from the warmest place. The cold air from the intake then would settle on the floor keeping the tanks cool. Trying to get the room all the same is a waste of time. I should use a natural process rather than try to beat it!

Maybe this info should be in the resources bit cos I know when you get awarded a trophy you can find some of the info there. It also says formus>help on the view all trophies but that help forum isnt available in the forum list. Just a bit of useability :) Top website btw :) Just my 2p as a new user.

Roll down platic front, lots of wires for fans, contactor, extension, adjustable light hanging, my smaller heated propogator, my custom propogator tray for 80 cuts and a few shots of how I train my mums. Theres UK Cheese, Big Buddah Blue Cheese, Big buddah Cheese and Lemon Haze mothers in there.
