Erases, using your experience and knowledge, is there such a thing as too much intensity or too much spectrum for a given gal or tribe of gals?
Yes and no. The more your spectrum is spread out, the more the plants can handle. If you have a 2 tone blue/red lamp, you can't give the plants too much intensity, thus having smallish growth. If you have a 4 tone, royal blue, regular blue, red and deep red, you can give the plants a little more. If it's all neutral-warm white, the plants can handle up to 1800 micromoles, though they'll only use about 1000 of them, strain dependent of course. I suggest for everyone that can afford it, grab yourself a par meter, it'll help you with light placement/intensity/coverage, regardless of the lamp you use.

LOL.

"super extra secret magic sauce spectrums" good shit amigo
It's what I do. bongsmilie

How do you all do multi-quotes? I did this one manually with copying/pasting and adding in the code myself. Kinda tedious really, I'm sure there's an easier way that I'm overlooking, this is really the 1st time I had a chance to check out the new version of RIU since I moved to WV.

It's great out here, nothing like sitting on the deck with a brew and the Volcano watching the sunset against the back of the mountains... Very calming really....

Hey Erasie' good to see you back around....still havent bought one of your panels... ;)

What will the whites be run at (current) or did i see they would be dimmable...?

Multi quotes......click 'reply' on the person you want to quote.....then on the next persons box...click 'reply' aswell.....it lines them up in the box i am typing in now....got 5 different people....click 'reply' in their boxes 5 times...

Dimmable from 350mA to 2.1a, the reds once we use them will be dimmable from 350mA to 650mA.

There's 2 versions on the way, an all white with a similar spectrum as the 190, and the other will have a similar spectrum as the 150/160, just the red peak moved over from 625nm to 650nm, it's not a huge difference in spectrum. Too much deep red is harmful, not enough doesn't do anything. You only need 100-200 micromoles hitting the center canopy, anything more you're hindering the plant's progress, and anything less, you might as well just keep it all white.

The all white version will be first, there's issues finding a proper power supply for so few Osrams, and they can't share a power supply with the XP-Ls, as they're too powerful, 350mA-2100mA dimmable. I'm sure something will be found soon enough.

As for models, there's just the one, since it's connectable, there's no need for multiple models.

Intensity always trumps spectrum, you can have the most magical secret sauce spectrum in the universe, if there's no intensity, it won't do you any good. This is why you won't see any above average grows using no-name Chinese LEDs. This is why HPS still works great with a less than optimal spectrum, and those 90w UFOs with super extra secret magic sauce spectrums barely finishing grows, they've yet to beat an HPS.

Do I think Chinese no-names will ever be more efficient than HPS?

What about with the 625 XPEs in the RW? Would ~200umol be about tops? If so i might have to get the meter out and readjust to check it out.

Plants can handle tons more regular red than deep red, just as they can handle tons more orange/yellow than regular red, HPS for example, since most of HPS's color is yellow/orange, plants can handle 2000+ micromoles.

I'm not sure where the maximums are, but 400-500 micromoles of regular red should never be an issue.

630nm??

What's going on there..change of theory?

So advanced, ss, and Area 51 sporting osram deep red now. I figured it was better..

But the apache rocks without it..

Almost wonder if led grow biz just ride the popularity train

Gotta respect apache for holding strong with their spectrum

Nothing against 51... good choice for peeps, way better than epiwhat...but the spectrums change so often..
i think its more about a51 giving us a cheap variety, some people swear by the xgs, some people swear by the rw or sgs.

I found the like button....
Very good info thanks for sharing EH. I agree with your statement above. I recall way back KNNA warned us that we should not use blue + deep red without the 630nm. So I used half 630s and half 660s and we added whites to smooth it out and it worked out very well.
Whatever happened to KNNA? I haven't seen anything from him in a while... He was one of the originals, credit where credit's due....

What's your opinion on the XP-Ls? Have you ran the numbers yet? They're essentially XM-L3s.

He disappeared for a long while and when he came back he told us that he had been having anxiety issues. Then he disappeared again and we have not heard from him since. Definitely an LED pioneer he did a lot of testing and shared his knowledge freely. He made rare parts available to us at near wholesale prices and gave free instruction on assembling lamps. I hope he is doing well whatever projects he is working on these days!

I am a fan of the XML2s and the top bin XPLs are one notch above the XML2s. Very promising I love to see the improvement in performance :leaf: Can you say approx what color temps they will be?

The dimmable driver will be a great feature for the lamps. Many scenarios that would come in handy for-
-You could dim it during vegging since the canopy height is shorter and less photons needed in this stage
-Energy misers can buy twice as many lamps and run them soft and cool and very close to the canopy and then crank it up during the most critical weeks of flowering, maximizing gr/W and system efficiency. That could allow for efficiency in the 40% range, impossible to find in commercial LED lamps.
-For soil growers if you accidentally overferted the soil mix you can crank it up to try and use up the food before the finish or if you underferted you can back it off to avoid an early fade.
-If you run into a heat wave you could run them soft temporarily to avoid high canopy temps in the flowering room
-During power outages you could run on 12V backup power system to keep the darkness from triggering flowering in your veg room

3500k.

The dimmers really make the lights quite versatile, like you said. People can more or less dial in their own efficiency, those XPLs at 350mA are absolutely unreal, though kinda expensive. Plus use only the intensity you need based on your canopy size.

It took me a while to get on board with dimmers, they can kill the longevity of the LEDs if it's a bad dimmer.

Yeah, KNNA helped paved the way in a major way, I hope he's doing well too.

awesome! thanks for the response. Going to check to see what my red only levels look like tonight.

@Eraserhead Any thoughts about making a light with CXA3590's top bin 90 CRI, with reflectors? I would be interested in seeing a production model with these or CXA3070's COB's.

WELL ive been eying Area-51 and or Advanced LED for some time . I as well and at a Crossroads with waiting for the new models and or Buying the xgs and sgs models . I have been looking at Advanced LEDS as well . I need to light a 5x5 lol so ill need several !. DECISIONS DECISIONS!
Annnnnd my thread just took off. Haha :) I'm new to led so I'm learning a bit lol

Probably going to need about four of them in a 5x520141008_171202.jpg

I run 4 Area 51's in a 5x5 with great results.
i was think of doing 4 SGS 160's or XGS or get 5 XTE 100's from Advanced. Ill be calling to ask since im buying more than a couple if theyd like to cut me a deal . Ive heard several people on here mention thats the way to go if you order 3 or more at a time. i have about to 2 weeks to make my mind up.

The thought of using CXAs crossed my mind, but I've yet to ever have or test one, I know they're probably the #1 choice for DIYers, but for commercial, one-size-fits-most panels, it will take some R&D to make them worthwhile. I have a lot more free time on my hands now, I will probably start testing them out in the next months.
