Whats Your opinion on defoliation

Your going to get a 50/50 argument.

There has been many grow's logged with defoliation and announce great results.

The same is said for disappointing results.

I have tried it myself and found it can go both ways. It seems beneficial when young and flourishing to stimulate more growth.
However later in the cycle I found it worked against me as the foliage did not grow back and energy only went to flowers. (still needs side by side comparison)

I still do it for juicing and yellow leaves but not as intense as the trial I did last year for RIU.

Here take a look.

I like defoiliation ! I've done it to my liberty haze with good results and will continue to do it on 50/50 hybrids and or sativas !!! Again not every strain prefers it . I usually do 2nd week of flower and then leave it alone the rest of the way . My liberty haze produced 10 grams dried extra than her sister. Anyhow trial and errrrror and finding out which strain can handle it abs which one can't.

defoliation is pruning leaves to get more lights to the buds right?
i know a few guys who swear by it

You realise that plants main source of photosynthesis is through big fan leaves.

Personally I train heavily in veg and then strip off growth that's going to be too far under my canopy to amount to anything decent during the stretch.

That was a awesome thread. You did with the defoliation test plant, I really enjoyed reading and seeing the pics. Mad props on the expierimentation bro!! I have defoliated on my current grow but my up comin ladies that r in veg I'm going to let them be and see what diff in yields I get. Thanks for the input. Helps out a lot

I def agree with you on how dif strains may not like it, I noticed my brainstorm haze girls begin to wilt after 2 leaves lol.

Yes. I to know a cpl good grower friends that stand by this as well but on the other hand I know. Just as many ppl that frown upon defoliation as well , and they will debate that the leaves are the plants power factory n such, which does make sense So. Bluejayz is right ! Guess il always find a 50/50debate on this topic lol

Very logical. I've had plants do horrible with defoliation in final yield and then I've had certain strains that I considered to have don awesome with it huh. I'm gunna give this a shot in my up coming cycle n just lollipop instead n see what goes on. Thanks for your input.

My pleasure, my goal was reached if it helped give you some ideas.

I'm still in the middle of the argument myself.

One side: Leaves are factories and without them you yield less.

Other side: We aren't growing leaves; we're growing flowers; so chuck em.

This side of the argument makes little sense. Yes, we want buds as the end result, but you don't get them without the leaves so chucking them wouldn't get you buds. We are most certainly growing leaves.

Wellp. Heres my take.

Defoliation has its ups and downs. Like any thing in life, too much is NEVER good. Defoliation can be implemented in many styles of growing, for me; I used it to help my CFL's better penetrate. I'm not saying rip off all of your sun leaves.. But open that canopy up in the middle of the plant just a little bit. It doesnt hurt in MODERATION. I am doing a grow now where I stripped ALL the fan leaves at about week 2 of flower. I have about 12 colas that are 10" long riddled with bud sites and COVERED in trichs. its only week 4 flower and the new fan leaves are covered too!!! Intense. However; In applications where the plant is in ideal conditions, I would not advise such a dramatic defoliation during flower. Anyone whos tried it and had a clue what they were doing will tell you it does GREAT in veg, light defoliation will make the plant grow faster like super-cropping in my experience. I opened a thread about this weeks ago. Be glad youre getting a response. It's going to come down to preference. Trial and error. And growing conditions.

I have to defoliate my lower stuff or it rests on my soil and I dont like having leaves sitting on wet soil . I only takeb out whatb I need to . I never remove leaves cause they are shading buds but I will remove a few from the center of my plant for better air flow . I grow up to a ring once im past my ring I defoliate alot of whats under my ring so I can water easier
