Wow, $10 an ounce from a DG? Including trimming? So you would grow me ten pounds for $1600? I think the cost of production is more like the $2, or maybe $1 a gram unless you get wet untrimmed outdoor. Looks like you could make money at $300/ lb I would like to see that. Or, maybe I wouldn't as explained below.
Price is down everywhere due to overproduction. BC has a huge number of underemployed people and drug enterprising immigrants (like the ones setting up the greenhouses in the woods around beaver dell). I'm telling it like i see it. It used to be hard to just get the things you need to set up and also hard to find advice. Now everything is on the internet or at the grow shop. You just have to walk in and they will set you up with everything you need- electrician, plumber, buyer, trimmers, its pretty much all in the open now.
I think the black market growers days are numbered unless they have a big setup paid for. Those imagining that they will have $2400 ind pounds again are going to be as disappointed as the ones that used to get $3000 p for outdoor.
The future, I think will be dominated by players like Koch Greenhouses down in Langley. They have great weather, huge hydroponic greenhouses and unlimited cheap labour by East Indians who work very hard for minimum wage. If you are already doing roses you have almost everything in place for cannabis. The growing, pruning, shading and temperature control, and pest control are all ready to go. They have cold storage for cut product getting ready to be trimmed. They just need a drying and trimming setup.
I would be surprised if an open market has any decent margin after a couple years. It's not like the wine industry in which there is a barrier to entry because the land and setup is expensive. You don't need a parcel around the second most expensive zone in BC to compete in the cannabis market.
Thats my two cents, plink plink
