Light Leaks: And Why I Don't Believe In Them

If they existed, then growing any plant outside would have to be the biggest light leak ever.

Unless something like this occurs, let's say a plants been growing in a enclosed environment for a while, and then some light leaks out, and a certain part of the plant that was getting light before, is now getting less light or none at all.

I guess that could have an affect, but other than that, I do not see having a light leak while the lights are on like an open door or tent flap, to be a problem.

The other side though, light getting in during dark period, Yes I understand this, problems. But that's not what I am posting about.

I just don't think that light leaking out of your enclosed grow space during lights on period will cause any problems, but I have heard it used as a suggested reason for problems a lot.

You make some good points here, but if someone is buying Feminized beans, who would want to increase the chance of hermie, or pollinated by anything that blows its dust thru that leak. Also, if you have a light leak when the lights are on...would you not have the same light leak when the lights are off. IMO - Peace

Yes, you could, I was mainly referring to when people say light leak during lights on from leaving a tent flap open to keep temperatures down, or something like that. Most people know to keep it sealed when lights out I guess. I think, it's all genetics, and if it's in the genetics, it's going to be in the genetics.

I grew out three bagseed, Skunk #1, which had come from plants that went to making seed during flower themselves, so to me that means it's in the genetics. It was from an outdoor harvest, not mine so I don't know for sure, either a plant(s) got pollinated, or a plant just went to seed on it's own, and these are where the seeds I grew out came from. It could have very well be in it's genetics from when those seeds/clones were planted for the outdoor grow as well, and then even furthur up the lineage. Who knows. I could have sprouted xx generation of seeded Skunk #1, bound to seed itself no matter what? Who knows right. Anyways.

-->

One of the three was a male, another was a smaller white seed, that grew into a stunted smaller stressed plant, and the third into a nice beautiful lady who guess what, decided to produce a few seeds, which to me, is cool, cause I might get a few the can be planted again and grown out, I'm ok with having 1 plant that has seeds.

A few things I will mention, it's possible that in overfeeding, I caused stress and triggered seed development through that. I did overfeed (2x nutrient in one feed), and caused that lovely nitrogen claw for awhile until just waterings straightened the leaves out.

It's also possible that in going into daylight savings time the shift caused some stress. I also changed the lights a furthur hour later (7:30 to 9:30 total change) to have the lights come on when the outside temperatures had dropped about 20 degrees. So there was a two hours shift forwards in light cycle.

I was also watered in below 65 a few times.

Simply, I don't think that me leaving my tent flaps open to keep temps down in the mid to low 70's caused her to produce seeds. I think the stuff I did, caused stress and activated part of her genetics and that's what caused her to produce seeds.

Time to smoke.

light leaks don't cause hermies. Poor breeding selections and unstable genetics is the cause of hermies. Fem seeds do not have recessive and stress recovery traits that come from the father plant.
Then how would you explain males that hermie? They are missing the recessive and stress recovery traits that come from the mother?

.every male I have seen grow buds and pollen / bananas. The buds are very small. Still covered in trichomes. Never heard of a hermie male nor seen one.

Wow did not lnow that! Very interesting little fact.

Kinda makes sence with thefems I had, when they turned out weak or underwent a lot of stress, they were done.

I had to kill two that were growing super retardedly compared to the majority, and I mean had to there was no point of them being alive they grew like a ditch weed
