What's the best Lowes has to offer?

The best chance I have for notes and soil in my town is lowes. I don't feel comfortable buying notes and soil offline. So what are my best choices? Oh and I plan to upgrade my cfl Closet a little this weekend. So I ask this. About how many cfls will I need to grow 6 medium size bushy plants maybe even a scrog? So how many would work without using too many as I'm still in a 2 ft wide space with 3 ft of height. I plan to just cut a hole in my wall to route hot air out but that can't happen until next week or week after. So ill still have to leave the door open for some time.

They carry bales of peat moss and an organic potting soil -- Harvest brand? -- for $5.98 per 1.5 cf. It's not the highest quality soil you can get, but using it mixed with peat moss, some kind of humus and amending with things like blood meal, bone meal, alfalfa meal, granite dust, etc, will put you on your way. There are a ton of cannabis specific homemade organic mixes on the internet. Google "easy organic soil mix for beginners" and the first hit should be for a thread in another cannabis message board. I don't want to step on any toes, so I won't post the link here. It's a terrific thread that should be required reading.

Lowes carries pro-mix that is what you should use. It's a peat-based medium that growers have used forever. It even has lime in it to help buffer ph.

You can ammend it with a bunch of stuff, or you could use it straight out of the bag and just feed your plants yourself_which gives you much more control over what your doing, and it also makes it much easier to flush and correct things if you need too.

Use promix and look for a fert with a 10-5-5 (or something close to that) for veg and something close to the opposite for bloom, 5-10-10(or close to it).

This isn't how I grow, but people have been using promix and big box store fertz to grow quality cannabis for years. Totally doable.

Sweet! That makes me happy. I have a total of about 220 watts right now with a total of 11 cfls I'm going to lowes this weekend to buy a bigger board to add more. About how many will I need for 5-6 plants?

I'm not sure about other areas, but none of the Lowes in my area carry Promix. Home Depot does, but not Lowes.

If I can't find pro mix what's second best? I want to do a small sog with 6 plants that will be harvested at medium height. So I will induce flowering after a month

Lowe's and Wal-Mart are the closest to me ,so that's where I get all my supplies.....i figure if one of those 2 places don't have what i need,i probably didn't need it anyway;)

I get my cfls and t5's from wal-mart.
My nutrients and most building(diy) supplies from Lowes.I like the Epsoma organic 3-4-4.The soil I use I get from the Dollar General it's a lot better than MG imo...it's cheaper and not as woody as MG potting soil.

I made all my diy cfl fixtures from materials sourced from those two stores...with a shout out to Ace hardware(for some small screws)

I have 40 23w bulbs and I have a 2x5x5 grow area.I could fit 3 medium size plants in 5g buckets.
You want six plants?Maybe start with three to lower your chances of a major loss;)
A scrog grow would be nice because you can veg one plant to fill your scrog and be able to keep the lights close.GL

I doubt I'll use a whole 40 bulbs. Not until I at least get a proper grow cab built. Still then that's alot. I might just start building the grow cab now. And buy quality parts and just see what this little girl can do by herself under the 220 watts. I still need to transplant. And what's this I hear about a polished air filtration? Because I really can't/shouldn't cut holes in my wall

Im doing the same exact grow on my next run basically, my tent is 30"x18"x36" and i plan on putting 6 photos 12/12 from seed in there under 6 23w and 3 42w cfls. Plan on throwing in 3 more 23watters when flowering. I might just go with 4 tho since space is tight

It super easy to repair a hole in the wall;).......even a 6-10in hole, just save the piece you cut out to reuse for the repair.
Polished air filtration????never heard of it.......maybe a nice polished chrome air filter?;)

Yea lowes stopped selling premix for who knows what reason, with my bag seed I started the seed with vermiculite peat moss and perlite mox to get a nice airy blend.

I would say, find a good organic potting soil (make sure whatever you get does not have any fert, or slow release anything) they make it sound oh so good on the bag but for our lovely ladies it's poison, or dig from lowes compost, and then supplement your own additives, such as bone meal blood meal etc.

I also used the Alaska fish fert.. stinks to high heaven but worked decently with my bag seed.

There are lots of formulas that growers can use to determine how many CFLs they will need.

For example, some growers recommend that you go by the amount of lumens (light) produced, or by the total wattage of your lights.

However, I think a simpler approach is much more effective, and will result in better yields for you.

Simply follow these principles with CFLs to get great yields every time:

  • All parts of the plant should be within 8-10” of a CFL bulb (CFLs should be kept 2” away from the tops of your plants

  • Any “shadowy” areas need another bulb

  • More bulbs = better results (You want to surround your plant with as many bulbs as possible because the penetration of CFLs is poor; in other words, more small CFLs is more effective than a few big CFLs)
Real-life Example: 7 x 26W CFLs (at 182 watts total) that are spread in an array around the plant will be more effective for growth than 1 x 200W CFL, even though they use less total electricity.

  • More lumens = better results (you can’t really give your plant too much light when growing with CFLs, more is better)

  • In the flowering stage, make sure that buds get direct access to intense light & keep CFLs as close to buds as possible without burning them (this will dramatically increase yields with CFLs)
The size and shape of your plant is going to have the biggest effect on how many CFLs you’ll need, and that’s why no “formula” is going to be accurate all the time. Any formula is just a rough estimate.

What if I’m still not sure how many CFLs to get?

You can use this formula to get started with planning your grow space, though I recommend using the guidelines above once your plant has actually started growing.

4,000+ lumens/sq foot (more is even better) - lumens is the measure of light as perceived by the human eye, and this number will be listed on the CFL bulb packaging

Example of Estimating Number of CFLs Needed For Your Grow Space:

  1. Multiple width x length of your grow space to determine the sq feet.
    Let’s say your grow space is 2’ x 2’ = 4 sq feet

  2. Multiple the sq feet of your space by 4,000 lumens to determine the total lumens needed for this space.
So 4 sq feet x 4,000 lumens/sq feet = 16,000 total lumens for that space

  3. Divide this number by the lumens produced by each bulb
If you’re getting 42W CFLs which are rated at 2,650 lumens apiece, that would be 16,000/2,650 = ~6

  4. This number is the minimum number of CFLs needed for your space
That means in this case you’d start with 6 (or more) 42W CFLs
Remember, this formula is just an estimate, and you will get the best results if you also follow the guidelines listed above.

Tip for maximizing the light to your plants: Use the power of reflection to minimize light loss. Cover your walls with reflective mylar or paint them with flat white paint. Utilize reflectors to aim more light where you want.

as far as soil, when i grew in high school, they had "jungle growth soil"..was awesome..but if you choose to feed them yourself,go with promix..and a bale (3.8cubic ft i think) fills 15 three gallon pot,to answer the question of how much to fill 6 pots..medium size plants in your space is relative..my clones couldnt fit in there,so are you flowering from clone, using solo cups? just curious..i dont think i could help ya much more, ive never scaled down a garden to that size..
