Best soil mix for noob.

Hi all,

What's the best soil mix for a noob?

I'm growing from clones, Harlequin and GDP x AK47.

Do I have to feed them nutrients or are they in the soil?

you'll get differing opinions but i like miracle grow organic choice, you can grow from start to finish in it. it doesn't have fertilizer pellets in it like some mg soils which u should avoid. and if u buy some tomato fertilizer or jacks all purpose or even regular miracle grow powder you'll be good to go. don't feed seedlings. wait for about 3-4 weeks befor you feed. then apply a half rate of about 1/2 tsp/gal water. up it as the plants get bigger. that's it dude. its easy. guys just like to make it difficult.

I have great results from Fox Farm Ocean Forrest mixed with a Peat Based Soil less mix.
Mix 1:1 for young seedlings and clones.
...then 2:1 or 3:1 for bigger plants.
Currently using FFOF + B'cuzz and my plants are loving it.

so u don't have any burn issues on seedlings when u mix the ff and a peat/lite soil? good idea though mixing the two.

use a Promix/MG mix with some perlite. I see Promix has a bagged mix at Menard's that I think I'll try this year

ProMix is great. I can't always find it at Home Depot so I mix my own most of the time. Wonder what the cost comparison is of ProMix to buying a bale of peat and a big bad of perlite and mixing it yourself? Hmmm.

IK, I didn't even look when I ran it thru on my card but it seemed expensive. I guess what I paid for was the "ph balanced lime whatever added" so I didn't have to mess with it. I do have a mom and pop garden store where I get perlite and verm 4CF, cheap so..

Occasionally, I may get a bit of burn on the first set of true leaves, but they recover.
I keep them in solo cups for a couple weeks, so I like the heavier FFOF of 1:1
If I started seeds in smaller cups, I would use more peat, instead. Then transplant them into bigger pots, with a heavier soil mix.
I like the FFOF + ProMix recipe, because I usually don't have to add any nutrients while I grow and it's pH balanced, so I don't really have to mess with it at all. K.I.S.S.

You use just the ProMix, and add nutes to feed your plants?
If so, that is really not soil. Soil contains nutrients for plants.
Thats why they call ProMix, Sunshine Mix, and B'Cuzz 'Soil Less' Mixtures.

Yeah, its ProMix HP and I add nutes, can you explain further, seriously I'm a noob and need help, the plants doing great though.

No, its not bad if you are having success.
That type of grow is more hydroponic, than soil.
The OP was asking for the best soil for a noob.

Thanks for all the replies, you guys rock! Sounds like a lot of different soils will work.

I ended up transplanting into 50/50 ocean forest and light warrior because I got some FREE bags of ocean forest and I already had the light warrior. I'm hoping the OF will give my plants some better natural nutrients.

I have some age old kelp and some bloom fertilizer but being a noob I have already over fed and under fed them. Doh! Didn't know you don't give newly transplanted clones full dose of N.

Next grow will be sub cools super soil for sure. That way I can sit tight and add a little bloom bites if needed. Already gathering the ingredients to start cooking it.

I really hope I figure something out. This site is a huge resource. Thanks again and good luck to you all. Wish me luck! Apparently noobs need a little.

I've only been able to try FFoF out everyone's suggestions above and had no problems sowing directly into FFoF with a little extra unamended perlite in party cups with plenty of drainage. At 15$ a bag im ok with it because I only grow two, 2 gallon pots at a time or so so a single bag does me good for a long time.
