We have been trying to get rid of these annoying gnats and we were putting potato slices on them and replacing them every day, but now there is green stuff on some of the cubes (See picture). What is this stuff? What should I do???????? Please help if you know!

Thank you!

The starch in your potato probably made a home for algae on your cubes.Or potatos when exposed to sun light develop a low grade poison [I think is called solimine] that is green I think you have bigger problems than the green, maybe someone can tell what is wrong with your seedlings Good luck Denris

That looks like algae to me, caused by a damp cube in light. Get rid of the light and the algae will die. You can do that by putting panda film on top of the cube…I just use a blackout garbage bag cut up into squares. I normally snip an X in the middle and then slide it over the seedling, but you're plants are too big for that.

I would cut an opening from one edge to the center of the square, then wrap it around the stem (not tight…it has to have room to grow) and loosely tape it closed.

It'll be ok as long as you deal with it. And rinse from any direction if you rub the cubes a little with your hands while you're rinsing them off you should we the green get lighter. You just need to cover up the Rockwool with plastic of some kind so the light can't get to the cube.

Got some covers for it. The guy at the store said that as long as you block the light they will be ok... I heard somewhere else to try peroxide on them 1 part peroxide and 9 parts water and spray it on them. I asked the guy at the store about that and he said that if you do too much too much to them it could hurt the plant and the algae doesn't really do much to hurt the plant and it will stop growing once there is no light. So was thinking of waiting until they need watered again and rinsing them at that time. Not sure.

^^^^Just cover them and they'll be fine. If you want, you can take a damp paper towel and wipe off the slimy part -- but you don't have to. The algae will die without light.

Yea i had algea once before i started covering with panda film, had it on top of coco once too. You don't need to clean anything, just cover it.

to kill the worms/flies use mosquito dunks break them up and feed from top once or twice
Great! Everyones on the same page for once... thanks.

So mosquito dunks will work for gnat larva too?? What section of the grocery store? Oh and do you put them on top of the plastic covers or on top of the algae and below the cover?
