I have a closet that i plan on putting a hps light in, the dimensions are 2.95ft wide, 1.57ft deep, 5.24 feet high. My ? is what size light should i get, a 250w or a 400w. From a lot of the posts i have read i think i will be safe getting a 400w, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I concur, 400 should be fine, I mean you are gonna have some heat issues, put the ballast outside the closet if you can, that has helped me alot. I have roughly the same size closet. 4x2x6.

i am planing on doing SOG and hopefully have about 9 small plants so i think i will go with the 400w hps, I understand i will have heat issues so what type of fan should i go with that is cheap and will last. In my cfl grow i only have 2 80mm 29cfm PC fans and the temps in that box are max 30 degrees celsius.
p.s. the grow is for personal use

How are you going to cool the room down, its one thing to say I know I am going to have heat issues its another thing to be prepared to fix it. Maybe you want to get a cool tube or put an air conditioner in the room that has the grow closet in it. I not trying to be harsh at all I just don't want you to be screwed with heat because you haven't a solid plan to reduce it. I run two 400 watters each is it own 3ft by 2ft by eight ft grow closet, I have a widow air conditioner that when set on low keeps the room about 70 degrees. I had major heat issues only running one 400 watter before putting in the a/c.

I also have a 400w HPS for closet grow. I DID NOT put my ballast in the closet, but on a board right outside. They do tend to get a little hot, (The ballast) so be careful. 400w is plenty for your grow. Worked great for me! Also, a regular roatating fan is plenty, however, moniter your heat. Very important. I actually left the closet doors open a bit for cool air.

yeah i really think you're underestimating how hot it gets. if it gets hot, stress for the plants, causing them to go male.

at the moment i plan on having an ice box connected to the passive intake. i will only be flowering through the night which gets as cold as 2 deg celsius, an aircon sounds like it would be the best bet thou. what type of air con should i be looking for.

My heat hasn't been too big of an issue, simply because I can open the doors when it gets hot, or just keep them cracked all together. But stealth is not a big deal to me, I have a private room that is for growing. But you may not have that luxury. And a fan in there just pushing the hot air around will not cool the closet if the heat cant escape. So, you will need intake and exhaust to cool it properly. I am speaking from personal experience. But good luck, and don't keep the ballast in the closet, that will take it down about five degrees, at least it did for me. Good luck buddy. You will figure it out.

the other night i borrowed a friends 1000w mh and had it 0n for 6hrs with a max temp of 45c but i dont want that much light just for a personnal grow.i also had that in the cupboard but with the doors open. how much is the heat difference is there between a 250w and a 400w hps.

i looked at your link. any light with a ballast connected to the hood or that would have to be in the grow room would cause you heat issues. i`ll look around for something to look at.
do you have a fan blowing on the tops of the plants to help with the heat?

i can see that the ballast is in the hood but wouldn't it be possible to move the ballast and mod the hood to have a fan so it would be similar to a cool tube. just a thought

thx bud. ya you could remove the ballast to save the heat, if you can do that then go for it.
